Subject: Shields + Health or just Shields?

Don’t get mad if I flame you because you cannot spell, or because my three year old has better grammar and etiquette than you.

Halo 2 system was good.

I dont get the people arguing about authenticity. It really cracks me up. Dude its a game, and its set in the future, I bet they also have realistic debates about zombies and comic superheros. Now go back to your parents basement before your tivo overheats from recording the star trek marathon.

They should definately put in some fall damage though. Not where it kills you but if the fall is really really big, like falling from a banshee, your shield should go down all the way!

Halo 2's is more stylish, but it should have health too and not just shields.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

I want authenticity. How the hell do you ever walk around during war and say "I've got three bars left, then I'm a goner."? I think Halo 2's is very smart; your shields are down, don't do something stupid, and you'll live. No "I can take this many shots based on having this much health".

Basically, I'm an authenticity freak.

Besides health packs are and will always be lame.

Yeah I agree 100%, lets waist the entire match looking for a Healthpack!

I personally like the Halo 2 shield/health method, both halo and halo2 had a good setup but in the end if you play the games on Legendary mode you will be glad to have a faster shields and have no worry about needing the health pack now or wait and come all the way back for it and then kill every little grunt, elite, and flood still alive

I'd like to see a modified Halo 1 health system. Instead of health packs, it would use biofoam to slowly regen health. BUT, you're health wouldn't be able to go back up to perfect. Biofoam can help you survive by filling a hole in you, but you won't be as good as you were before you got shot.

As for the semi off topic disscussion, I'd say fall damage (if implemented) should hurt your health a lot, but not hurt your shields as much.

OK, yes, it is very true that I'm a dumb ass. I'm not denying that. However, isn't the whole point of a beta to increase the amount of users until you get someone dumb enough to try something you haven't anticipated.
Johnrap - Unofficial Dumbass of Halo 3 Beta

Like falling 80 feet without being hurt is realistic. It's easier to judge time of the fall with your death rather than the distance in H1. How do you resolve that issue? You don't get hurt, unless you're off map, for falling. What an improvement.....

in the books MC fell from orbit and survived unharmed. so falling 80ft seems "realistic"

  • 07.01.2006 9:01 PM PDT

"I'm hungry..."

Ok. Hold everything...

Having no health bars didn't make it more realistic.

It made it more fun! It made the gamplay faster, more frantic and edge-of-your-seat.

Is that not what I just said? Christ, people can't read.

  • 07.01.2006 9:06 PM PDT

that which is not dead can eternal lie, but with strange aeons even death may die.

Personaly I think the "invisible health system" in halo 2, was veryrealistic. and good
because after your shields were down you still had like an "soft shield" bar were when you took damage it would flare, and if you constantly took the same amount, or got hit with something big you die.

proving this.

If you shoot someone with a plasma pistol every 3-4 seconds. even if they have no shields. you CANT kill them. just because its not strong enough..

(I think thats bad, cuz I wouldnt wont to be hit with plasma.)

To voice the truth, we really haven't had anything "realistic," yet. Take losing your shield for example. When you shield is down, it is like you have nothing protecting you at all. It is as if every projectile happens to go straight through your armor (the same armor they use on the battle cruisers, for your information) or right between the plates. It is almost as if the Chief is naked when losing his shields, like he is wearing no armor at all.

Lol to those people I say, so walking around and picking up a rectangular box that refills your health bar is [bold]realistic[/bold]?

We're talking about health bars in general for the game, not realism issues. No health bars is more realistic is all he was saying, that has nothing to do with the realism of anything else in the game, like falling

Really...? I could of swore realism was meantioned at least once in every post I quoted.... I don't see the point of having realism of health if you couldn't nail the rest of the game making it too unbelievable any how. Hell, ditch the health bar and use damage areas. Hit in the arm? Guess you can't DW anymore. Hit in the leg? You're as mobile as a one leg, one wing duck.

Are you guys talking about the FOR? When 27 Spartans rode the Pelican down reached Terminal Velocity? The same fall that they almost all died from?
Q:How many Spartans were KIA during that jump?
A: Enough to warrant fall damage to your health. Not shields. The concussion broke Spartans bones and ruptured some of their organs. So eat it Blues!

Bring back the halo 1 health. I don't think its right that you magicaly heal when your shields back up. Or maybe add health but make it regenerate slowly.

Okay. Take this: When IN GAME are we going to jump out of a Pelican going terminal velocity? Never. And no, it does NOT warrant fall damage. Suck it, reds! No fall damage.

Halo 2 DID have health, and it DID regenerate slowly. And as to bringing back health, no. I don't feel like spending half of my existince hunting for a box that magically heals me. If Halo: CE was so great that Halo 3 should be based off of it, why don't you just play Halo: CE? I don't want Halo 3 to be like the first game, or the second game, I want it to be like Halo 3. End.Of.Story.

you should read the books, the spartans fell/jumped out of a falling ship... thousands of feet in the air, and only a couple of them died, so 80 thats all

We're playing a first person shooter, not 3D pacman. I think it's much more action-packed when you're not running around saying "Where's a health pack? Where's a health pack!?"

I thought someone would try to defend with that. Spartans/Elites are meant to take long falls. Elites have large muscles in their legs, I mean look the legs are HUGE, Spartans, in teh Ghrapic Novel I think it shows John in an atmospehric drop wit the new MJOLNIR. Wikipedia also says the new suit's sheilding is so powerful it can reduce or eliminate fall damage. Getting out of the map with extreme large falls is unrealistic, but thats glitching. Not meant to be done.

P.S: Fall damage was also taken out to the Swords pyhiscs(sp). Not the most realistic right there. but Bungie had to alter a few things to put it in.

I think including health packs makes the gameplay much more tactical. I was playing halo 1 on legendary today and thinking "crap! the last health pack's over there, I've got 1 bar of health and theres a load of grunts and two elites I need to kill before I can get it!"

In halo 2 when you're in a big firefight like that you just think "right, my shield is down...I'll just hide behind this big rock here and within 5 - 10 seconds, I'll be fine again!"

I say either include health packs again or do something else to make halo 3 more tactical.

And what happens when you run out of health packs? Either doing the same part over and over again and get lucky(LEgendary) or restart the level. I found that way too frustrating. They wern't realisitic anyway. You can''t just walk over a box and your perfectly healthy now. Now keep it like Halo 2 or have "regenerating" health that regenerates slowly over time, like i n Far Cry. This time it would be all the Biofoam jazz.

Besides the unrealism of health packs, the Spartan suit automatically "heals" injuries with it's biogel...

Perhaps.....shields and health. But no health packs. You can only re-gen your health at the start of each mission. Aye? aye? aye?
