Maybe the flood that were kept inside halo for investigation didnt need to feed for all those years. like halo is their own mini-ark.

In Halo: CE, the Flood were released from an observation/research section on the Halo, causing a second outbreak. The Monitor can be heard saying something about how fortunate it was that some survived to reproduce. This doesn't explain where the Gravemind came from though...

Maybe the Forerunners built salvage from the blasts of the Halos...along with a few other species and stuff. After they left the salvage, the Flood ate them. Thus, allowing the flood to reproduce.

Maybe...

The Flood went into a hybernation state, and were able to survive (barely) off of their limited calcium stores for 100 000 years. Amazing, if you think about it; the amount of energy one would have to use per year alone would be a sliver of what we use per minute. Per second, even.

Maybe since the flood in Halo: CE had just been released they didnt gather enough bodies to make the combined intelligence that is gravemind. in halo 2 u could see in quarantine zone that obviously the sentinels have been fighting the flood for a long time so maybe they could have made a gravemind a long time ago.

From what I understand from other people's theories in the forums is that the flood were a creation of the forerunners in an attempt to achieve immortality that failed miserably. If this is true, it would explain how they survived all those years without food. The reason they didn't die from the Halo rings when they were detonated, was because they only destroy sentient (thinking) life, which the flood are obviously not

well yeah... but somewhere in the game when that flying piece o' -blam!- 343 GS is flying around, he says " the Flood's parasitic nature, undermine its intelligence" so idk just a thought.

HOW???????????????????

  • 07.02.2006 10:02 AM PDT

Yea, I was thinking the exact same thing. IF "sentient life" pertains to anything living then, the Flood should have been wiped just as well, unless I'm misunderstanding something.

But, the infection flood have no thought all they do is... find.... kill... eat... so the ones that mutated would have been obliterated but, the infection flood would have remained to starve until their food came another what 1000,000 years later.

No one knows. It's one of the many Halo mysteries. Alot of people have been saying that maybe they can go into a "hibernation" state that the Forerunners didn't know about.

Alas, a stroke of genius in this otherwise barren thoughtless wasteland we call the Halo 3 forum!
