I thought Halo 4 had the best soundtrack since CE/2 for me.

Most people I see complaining about it are just obsessed with flogging Marty O'donnells sack.
Or maybe it's just because his soundtrack is much better and more memorable.

What house has a rocket pod, has legs, and has a long narrow barrel that probably shoots something powerful?

Sounds like you're describing the lower half of my body, actually.

Or maybe it's just that we have a better ear for music. I don't know about you, but this song gives me chills every time I listen to it. It is a wonderful composition by one of the greatest entertainment composers. I know most of you don't know much about the actual theory behind composition, but it's more than an art, there is science to it. It makes the difference between the generic and feelingless music of Neil Davidge and the emotional themes of Marty. It's not a debate, it's just a fact of life.

Don't forget about Jeremy Soule.

Except sitting at home, naked, eating twinkies, rubbing your hands together going "Heh. Target Destroyed. Mission Accomplished." Oh wait. that's not helping.

I'm going to post this again, since I bothered to write it and for some reason it was ignored over posts like "OMJ U SO STUPAD".

I agree. Notice how when movies are rebooted they use both chord progressions and even in some cases just redone versions of the old songs. Throwing out the old soundtrack and themes in exchange for a tracks of mood music was an idiotic move. It shows more than ever how 343i wants to get rid of Bungie's Halo in it's entirety. Anyone who thinks the soundtrack sounds like Halo needs to get their ears checked. Furthermore 117 was the only track that referenced the music of Marty (No I will not count the crappy remix of every Halo song in the credits), and it was not composed by Davidge. In fact in several parts of the game it appears Davidge literally used the tracks to other popular works, such as Star Wars. Even if he only did so in spirit they did not fit with the Halo vibe.

In closing Davidge is a composer who does not know what style he wants to write in. He flip-flops in style and theme with every track, with no real Halo 4 theme ever established. The only song I heard played more than once in the campaign is 117, which shockingly is not Davidges work. The fact that they needed to use Marty's songs in the credits clearly shows the lack of any slow theme music being built for Halo 4, or really memorable music of any kind. I could listen to any track from Bungie's Halo games and know which exact part it was played in. It was memorable. I can not say the same for Halo 4, and I know many others are on that same boat.

"Hi, ha, ha, ho, hi, ha, ha, ho... dududududu, dududududu, ha, ha, i, hi dududududu!!!" -__- That's a teenager with Cubase that is.

Completely disregarding the quality of Halo 4's soundtrack, I still think that they should switch composer for every game, it would be a lot more interesting that way. Give number five to God is an Astronaut for instance.
Dramatic post-rock for Halo? ehhhhh not so sure.
Don't get me wrong, god is an astronaut is pretty awesome and creates some pretty good soudntrack-esque music but I doubt they'd be a good fit for a video game.

I still think Marty was born to forge Halo's music

Same here.

Marty's compositions define Halo as a series.

Sometimes, I barely notice it.

Then comes the part where the music sinks in and I realise I like it.

It's not great, but some segments are incredible.

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

Cubase 5 didn't come with any of those as presets. And, well, I wouldn't be able to understand why anybody would even keep DAW presets.

I agree with the composer part.
Haha, toucé. What I meant was--if I may elaborate--that it sounded as something an overzealous teenager would have made after having discovered a musical softwere, and attempt to pass off as an official leaked track, on Youtube.
It doesn't have any finesse/flair whatsoever, just really obvious and cheap sounds.

Nice that you agree on the mixing things around part though. Anyone you got in mind?Posted by: kil1ertomatog

Well, 343i have already twisted the art direction, why not sound? I think it could work perfectly.

I read both Cryptum and Primordium whilst listening to God is an Astronaut, it accounted for some truly epic moments, like hearing Fragile when Bornstellar fell through space and getting a first look at Installation 05.

What is Halo music anymore anyway? It's not just O'Donnell (unless you're a purist like me), it's Davidge, and the guys behind Halo Wars OST too.

BNet, the only vidya game forum where sigs are pointless.

A lot of the tracks are completely forgettable, with Nemesis, 117, Legacy and Green and Blue being the exceptions.

117 is the only one I remembered for longer than a day, and even the theme to that eludes me now.

  • 11.20.2012 7:16 PM PDT

It's good, just not as good as Marty's work. Halo 2 destroys all.

Allons-y!

The only good one is the War Games menu theme, and it's mediocre at best.

I didn't care if they sounded Halo or not, they just sounded like garbage. There isn't a single track that sticks with me, and that's sad.

Well even Halo Wars used Halo-esque chords in most of it's songs. There is a "Halo sound" Davidge just wanted to make it a Davidge sound. The Davidge sound is apparently smashing 15 or so different genres together and assigning each it's own song. Look at my examples from a multiple games above. That is good music.

I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

Fittingly enough OP, "117" is the only piece on the original soundtrack not composed by Neil Davidge.

I heartily enjoy Halo 4's soundtrack, but not as much as the original trilogy's though. Neil Davidge isn't exactly Marty, but he isn't too far away either. Not for one second do I regret buying the Special Limited Edition of the Halo 4 OST. You get a much better understanding of the music without the game's noises fighting for your attention. Also, the Remix Soundtrack is epic.

No. No. That's the sound of ignorance. I'm going to repost a series of posts with good game music in them. Notice that only one game is Halo. Regardless of the game it's in Davidge's music is just generic awful mood music.

Stop arguing over imaginary -blam!-. May as well argue over Santa Claus. There will never be proof that there is/was a god - and before people start saying "HERP DERP PROVE THERE WASN'T ONE ROFLOLOL" well, you are the people who made it up in the first place so we know there isn't one
What created the big bang then? A coalition of genetically modified TR-909s with extra distortion?

I wanna say it's a combination of Nexus and Sylenth. Still, it isn't like Marty synthesized or sampled everything either.

Nice that you agree on the mixing things around part though. Anyone you got in mind?I would like to see a much greater emphasis on ambient pieces. Maybe do something like Mirrors Edge where there was multiple people contributing to it.

You can find me lurking the flood. Bring snacks.

At first I really didn't care for Halo 4's OST, it was bright and very brassy in comparison to any Halo music Marty has written. But it grew on me. I still prefer Marty's more orchestral sound and style, but Neil did a great job with the OST. It may not be familiar, but it fits Halo... 343's Halo, like a glove.
