Hold your horses, people -- this has to do with Halo 3. And, if my ideas are correct, then we may have seen more of Halo 3 than we thought...
Many people were dissapointed with the Halo 2 announce trailer, and the pre-release hype in general. All the commercials, the promos, the previews -- the entire ad campaign, really -- were based on the idea that the Covenant were about to strike Earth hard, and that the Master Chief was the planet's only hope.
When Halo 2 was released, people everywhere were disgusted that only two levels took place on Earth, and that even then there was no big invasion -- just an accidental discovery. The Covenant had no idea that Earth was the human homeworld. They came with a small fleet that quickly fled. The big battle promised in countless ad blitzes was seen only in the game's penultimate cutscene, when the Master Chief arrives at Earth in Truth's ship.
Now, it is believed by many that Halo 2 was cut short -- that it was supposed to end the series, but that Microsoft forced Bungie to chop off the second half of the game and sell it as Halo 3 for the benefit of the Xbox 360. This would explain the missing vehicles and weapons, the Halo 3 artwork (especially the Ark concept sketches) seen in the Halo 2 behind-the-scenes DVD, and the misleading nature of the ad campaign. If this theory is true, then the events of Halo 3 were originally meant to be the second half of Halo 2.
Now, consider this: what if the Halo 2 ad campaign, including the announce trailer, was already well into production before the choice to split Halo 2 in half was made? If true, then these ads would contain elements of Halo 3, which were supposed to be part of Halo 2 at the time they were made.
If all this is true, then the Halo 2 announce trailer may be a peek at the action to come in Halo 3. Think about it: the events seen in the Halo 3 trailer have been confirmed by Bungie to take place about halfway into the game. So why wouldn't they do the same thing with the Halo 2 trailer? Maybe the epic bombardment of Earth seen there is not misleading hype, but actually a glimpse of the battle that is occurring at the end of Halo 2! It makes sense; at the time the trailer was made, it's possible that that particular battle was only supposed to be about halfway through the game. If Halo 2 was split in two, then that battle and everything following it, including the Ark's discovery, was used to make Halo 3.
So, if my theory is correct, then the events seen in the Halo 2 trailer (the bombing of Earth, the failing defenses, etc.) are actually events that will happen in at the beginning of Halo 3. Heady stuff...
PS: If you want to see this for yourself, here is the Halo 2 announce trailer. As you watch it, imagine that it takes place shortly after Halo 2 ends -- that the Master Chief has caused havoc on Truth's ship and has escaped onto a disabled human vessel. In the meantime, all of the Covenant ships seen at Delta Halo have arrived and are now attacking Earth. So now the Master Chief is diving down onto another Covenant ship to make it to the surface, and to the Ark. It all makes sense now...
