Talking about Sweden is an ultrabannable offense.

Too bad being completely and utterly wrong isn't a bannable offense.

Whelp, here's my controversial thread for today.

I've seen over the past few months what with the Colorado massacre, gun debates and all of everything that many people here wouldn't give a second thought about shooting (and possibly killing) anyone that commits a crime.

Does this mentality extend as far as the death penalty, however?

In Indonesia and particularly the death penalty exists for smuggling drugs.

Here in Australia the death penalty has been abolished, although there are some people who would like it back.

I don't want to colour this discussion with my own opinion, so you start.

What crimes deserve the death penalty?

No crime deserves the death penalty.

Even mass murdering an entire theater full of people? There are some things in this world that should just get you automatic termination, because it takes a really screwed up person to methodically kill that many people.

It goes from being justice to vengeance when we cross to the point of executing someone.

This.
Not only is it more expensive to kill someone that imprison them, it's also fairly ridiculous. Most mass-murderers are obviously mentally screwy, and therefore partial victims as well.

I'm pretty sure if your entire family was murdered, you would want some tough justice done.

The Universe demands to be noticed, to be seen, and dutifully noted.

What use all those incredible firework dimensions if no eye fixes and reflects, no brain takes notes, no heart moves with passion at the display?

NASA answers the silent cry of the Cosmos for recognition.

NASA is the witness and we fellow witnesses to the endless deeps.

I would say any count of first - degree murder - abolishment of the death penalty on a global scale would cause massive overcrowding of jails, and will prove to be a massive burden on the economy + taxpayers.

On second thought - any major offense could theoretically be deserving of the death penalty if it is communicated clearly and repeatedly to the populace - such as the running of drugs in some South-East Asian countries - you've been warned, you took the risk anyway, don't expect to get let off that easily.

I don't need no stinking signature!

I think several criminals do deserve death, but i'm still against letting the government institute any form of legal death penalty.

This sums it up nicely.

Murder unless insanity is involved (and even then, if it's a repeat murderer, they should be executed anyway), -blam!-, anything involving the willing destruction of another or their life, unless justified, such as the killing of a rapist or a murderer.

I'm a firm believer in punishment being as harsh as the crime.

The relatives should have no part in the judgement of the punishment- they're biased. That's why we have judges and juries.

They should be treated and kept away from society as to ensure they can't harm them. The insane are victims as well, and only those to powerful to jail (druglords and power criminals within the circle of organized crime) should be killed in order to protect society.

  • 11.26.2012 6:55 PM PDT

I think it should be less about the specific crime, and more about their over-all mentality and intentions.

Some people make mistakes and they have to deal with the consequences of that. But once they do their time, have every possibility of being a contributing member of society.

Others are just bad to the core. They'll never bring anything but misery to this world and those they encounter no matter the circumstances. These are the people I would have no qualms with eliminating.

As barbaric as that may sound.
