What about someone that rapes 50 children (killing them all), kills 20 adults, and ends it all with killing the president. (Even if you don't like Obama, pretend it's whatever person you think should be the president so you care.)

Still just gets put in a cell?

No retribution for those possibly 70 families and the entire nation?

If we kill him, we're just as bad as he is. Killing in revenge isn't right.
No we're not. We're 1/71 as bad as he is.

But what good comes from killing that person? What is the gain? I understand the financial aspect of execution, but the very act itself seems archaic. The dead don't care, must we "appease their angry spirits" like in ancient times?

Canadian Nazism is a polite ideology, ok?
"Into the boxcar now... there you go. Oh, watch your head. Here, let me help you... Yep, showers are right through there. No problem at all."

None.

Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant. For you. Hate. Hate.

Repeated raep offenses
multiple murders

honestly that's probably about it.

What if he kills 4 more people in prison? Those people were just tax evaders that were going to get out in 3 days to see there family. All of them.

Those people could've been saved if this psychopath had been put to death.

If the prisoner raped and killed over 70 people, he's probably gonna be put in solitary confinement or locked up in a psych ward where he can't hurt anyone.

Prisoner is only 20 and is in very good shape. We waste taxpayer money on him for 60 years. What if he's imprisoned in a state of one of his victims? We're now wasting that family's money to keep him alive for 60 years.

If we're going to get excessive then yes the death penalty is deserved.

But if it's one murder and the guy was framed but charge anyway, would you want him dead?

Is money really that important?

And if so, wouldn't it be more humane to exile offenders to some remote island or other desolate location? I'm being semi-serious here. It would be cheap (costs being transport and basic survival tools for prisoners) and would at least give prisoners a chance at starting anew.

LOL that's plausible.

The Death Penalty, like so many other topics, is too controversial to be able to possibly move to one side. I say no to the Death Penalty because you are killing someone. But the other side of me says it is okay because they killed many people. Moral decisions like these are not etched into your soul like stone. You will always feel conflicted about a moral choice unless you are blind to the consequences and/or benefits. Fictional heroes that we all know and love such as Batman or Connor from AC3 are conflicted with their choices. Yes Batman doesn't kill but if you remember that final scene with the Joker in Arkham City, oh yes, quite the conflicted bat.

Anyway, I'm getting a little off topic.

I say no to the death penalty because I value morality over everything else. I could not settle with myself knowing that I could have saved someone from death, even if they have killed others. But I also wouldn't complain if someone like Hitler or Osama was executed. Very touchy indeed.

Grievous crimes on children, Serial killers, mass murderers.

Thats mostly who deserves it.

Generalizations.
Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.

I think the death penalty should be saved for extreme cases. Murder, for example.

I favor a more rehabilitative system than a system based on punishment.
- America's current system, based on punishment, has a 60% re-offense rate.
- In Europe, where the system is based on rehabilitation, the re-offense rate is 20-30%
Punishment results in 2 to 3 times higher re-offense rates than rehabilitation does.

-------

If you're going to lock someone up, at least turn them into something useful for society. Fix whatever problems they have so they can be productive. Just letting them rot in a cell does no good for anyone.

-------

And finally, I bring forth the Constitution. 8th Amendment declares that no cruel and unusual punishments may be inflicted.
The death penalty, for anything other than the death of the victim, is cruel and unusual as defined by the Supreme Court ruling of Kennedy v. Louisiana. The only exceptions to this are "Crimes Against the State" such as treason.

What if the person who murdered was going to be released, and it was known he would kill again? And that the only way to stop him would be the death penalty?

Of course not! But let's be hypothetical... What if he would still be released?
He'd be on parole and monitored. Something iffy happens and they bring him in again, hopefully. Hopefully.

It doesn't always happen like but that's what parole officers are for.

But he'd only be eligible for parole as long as they don't think he'll repeat offend.

Is there really any reason as to why the life sentence system doesn't work? It works in Australia.

Personally, the more I thought about the death sentence and life sentencing, the more I feel against the death penalty... Not because I think it's wrong, no. But for these reasons: It's too expensive and gives the killer an easy way out. To be sentenced to life in prison would be sentenced to spend the last of however many hellish years you have ahead alone in a cage, the worst offenders getting isolation cells (they are in a cell for I believe 23 hours a day with no contact with anyone and released into a square concrete courtyard with nothing in it for an hour). I'd go mad and be begging for the death penalty in just a month. Even if it was just regular sentencing, it'd be terrible. The death penalty is just too easy.
And if there's a false sentencing at least you can release the poor guy. If there's a false execution, what are you gonna do? Bring 'em back from the dead?

  • 11.26.2012 11:54 PM PDT

Banned and proud of it.

I always thought the death penalty wasn't harsh enough.

hmm

Not a fan of the death penalty, but if i person committed a really horrendous crime. I would like to see that person suffer.

  • 11.27.2012 12:19 AM PDT

Murder. Only if it can be 100% proven that the suspect in question is guilty of it.
