WRONG AGAIN, PAUL!

Humans are unique (at least since we eradicated all other highly intelligent life on the planet). See, we're not going to die like the dodo, why? Because we have the capability to live beyond a single planet. This means that we're incredibly unlikely to be wiped out once we establish colonies beyond the Earth and in terms of the universe, we're on top of the discovery of interstellar technologies. We could get there within the century if we tried (project daedalus, we didn't do it because it's insanely expensive). Eventually, we'll be able to stop the death of stars. We will live FAR longer than any other species IF we don't destroy ourselves. The greatest threat to humanity's survival is currently ourselves.

I think humans are stupid.

Meanwhile we've split atoms, mapped genomes, collided particles at near light speed and have eradicated entire viruses. Please, tell me why we're dumb? Because as of right now, we're the smartest species in known existence. We're no where near dumb. We're not all knowing, maybe not as smart as some of us think we are, but we are absolutely, in no way stupid.

why? Because we have the capability to live beyond a single planet.

We still have to make it a few hundred more years before thats a reality. Chances are we won't set first foot on another planet for at least another quarter century. How long until actual colonization is feasible? Might be a long ways off.

Eventually, we'll be able to stop the death of stars. We will live FAR longer than any other species IF we don't destroy ourselves. The greatest threat to humanity's survival is currently ourselves.
I agree, we are likely our own greatest threat. Disease could still kill us back to the stone age. We'll still have to worry about extinction sized asteroids for a few centuries. But, even if we survive all that, it still won't be us watching the sun die out. -blam!- Sapiens will be replaced. Might be so gradual we don't notice it. And so on and so on until our own flesh and blood descendants are nothing like us. But, no matter how things work out, it won't be our species watching the sun die.

Does the wolf owe anything to the rabbit? Or the parasite to the host?
They may very well owe a great deal, but this dept is one that is to be never paid off in a direct fashion. Nature works like that.

We could colonize the moon within the decade. We could have done it decades ago. NASA would have if they were given the green light, but it wasn't approved because of funding. And have to worry about extinction sized asteroids? No. We can stop them already, it's incredibly simple. And obviously we'll evolve, but evolution has slowed dramatically since we are now all mixed. As for disease. VERY unlikely. We have a population exceeding 7 billion. Even if we utterly fail to vaccinate and quarantine or treat the disease, we'll have a lot of survivors.

To be honest, I was mostly speaking of our own children and subsequent generations that will be a new species some day, but, there are other animals that could possible find themselves an evolutionary fastback of some sort, if we decide to eliminate ourselves from the picture. I mean do we owe anything to the future dominant species that is bound to come after us?

What house has a rocket pod, has legs, and has a long narrow barrel that probably shoots something powerful?

Sounds like you're describing the lower half of my body, actually.

I don't know but I do know my dog owes me a cookie. Piece of crap ate it.

We could possibly colonize the moon, we won't anytime soon. Also, to ensure no extinction, that colony would have to be completely self-sustainable. That's a long way off as well. The possibility of preventing an asteroid strike exists today. We have some technology that could help. However, we are not aware of every planet killer in the solar system, let alone all the smaller ones that could decimate us. There are no guarantees there. Same with disease, we're pretty good at dealing with them, but there is always a chance we could get a new disease that kills and spreads too rapidly for response.

Remote possibilities, but they are they type of event that allowed mammals to take over to begin with.

What do you mean by "future dominant species"? Our evolved children? We will be long gone. Another intelligent species? We would fight them for power like we always do as humans. And I though that we removed ourselves from the equation to allow that other species to progress. Could you reword the question?

Canadian Nazism is a polite ideology, ok?
"Into the boxcar now... there you go. Oh, watch your head. Here, let me help you... Yep, showers are right through there. No problem at all."

To answer the question in the title, a resounding no. Not a single thing.

I mean any of the following. Our evolved children, another species we allow to evolve (we may be smart enough not to kill them in the future), or a complete reboot if we decide to destroy ourselves, or get killed in another mass extinction event. Any one of these is possible, the point being we going away, and something will replace us.

In memory of those fallen in the defense of Earth and her colonies.

We owe them the planet.

No...not really..but we could at least be..hmm how should I put this..Not Jerks to other species...and while we're at it the planet we live on

  • 11.28.2012 12:17 AM PDT

Muffins are just ugly cupcakes

As a species with the power to wipe out other species without even trying, we have to take it upon ourselves to protect our ecosystem (largely from ourselves), even if only for our best interest.

You'll never amount to anything, go back under your bridge.

I don't owe nobody nothing

The lone tree marks our bunkers only entrance, do not be seen entering.

We are all playing our role in the grander scheme of things. Every last being is important to the universe, one way or another.

  • 11.28.2012 1:32 AM PDT

Of course we are not going to last, we have the potential to be a type 3 civilisation and achieve a galactic wide empire of sorts, but there are too many things weighing us down, too many centralized problems stunting our progress.

Its a shame really, to think that in my lifetime, man will not land on mars.

Straight Edge.

This is a really intriguing thread. Will be helpful for my major Philosophy assignment.
