Master Chief Rules!!!

With the rise of tablets, I think that the end of laptops for personal use is nigh.

That will leave desktops for office and design, and just tablets for consumers.

I've even seen some laptops by Lenovo which are laptops + tablet, but I think the combination is pretty much useless considering most of the people use their computers for web surfing and social networks.

What do you think?

lolno.

People said that about desktops when laptops became affordable. Now they're more powerful than ever.

Don't LOL if you aren't L'inOL.

Halo: Reach
Halo 3
Halo ODST

Nope. I completely prefer laptops over tablets.

Please do not send me group invites.

Nope. Tablets fill an entirely different market than laptops. The only tablets that can fill the spot of a laptop are the high-end ones like the Surface.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

As a consultant who travels frequently, I can't see myself going to just a tablet until there is one of sufficient power to support my work (Surface Pro may be able to, we shall see).

With that said, I travel with a Dell XT2 which is a laptop/tablet convertible. I also take my 3rd gen iPad along and have (when the XT2 was out of service or not portable enough) used the iPad as a stopgap. It worked, but not well enough for me to abandon a laptop completely.

I'm not saying the change is made. But I think we're moving in that direction. Tablets are gonna get more powerful and they are way lighter than even the thinnest laptop. If you get one of those keyboards, you get what a laptop can do for MOST of consumers, I'm talking mass market here

  • 11.27.2012 2:53 PM PDT

The way I see it, the tablet market and laptop market are merging. With the right mechanism to attach a keyboard to a tablet, we don't need really laptops anymore. Desktops will always have their spot for being so much cheaper for more raw power; they will dwindle, but not disappear.

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lube.

I can see more laptops with touch screens, rather than no laptops at all.

CamCamm: How does that work?

Nope that is like saying phones will take over the console market. A table just can't provide as much as a laptop can at least currently. There would have to be a lot of improvements in hardware/software for it to do so.

If I don't believe in him...

why should he believe in me?

I will never DJ, program, prepare stuff for college classes, etc with a tablet
maybe if i was a computard who used computers casually, but i am not

Until a tablet has 100% functionality that a computer has it will never take over laptops.

Butter my ass, turn around, spread open my butt cheeks, and say "Right here mutha-blam!-a!!"

Join Planetary Annihilation and Speed Haven

The only thing I would consider is one of the Asus transformers, and that would still be paired with my desktop.

No it isn't. Smartphones and consoles are very different. Tablets and laptops share a lot of characteristics.

iPhone 4S 64GB Black.

Laptops > Tablets > Desktops.

The laptop experience is unbeatable. Nothing will ever beat the experience, at this current time. However, I do like those hybrid tablet-laptop things, they're really cool.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

I would like to imagine/envision a time when we have with us a portable/handheld device that is our "device" and just as ubiquitous as wireless Internet has become, when we bring that device close to a monitor/mouse/keyboard, the device connects to those external peripherals and we use them "on our device".

Walk away and the device still has the apps running and maintains the connection that we were in the midst of.

Go into a room with a television (but no keyboard or mouse)? The device connects to the television and the device is used for UI (gestures, keyboarding, etc.). Walk away and your apps/device comes with you.

It interacts with your car, stereos, televisions, PC monitors, anything. It is the processor and connection hub, your storage is on the cloud, and any display or HID is detected, connected, used.

IMO, a properly powered and connectable tablet would be optimal for some, for others something the size of a smartphone would be preferable.

That sounds like 2017-2020-ish. But it will happen. There's no need to have several devices. It will eventually happen.

Just like a year or two ago I predicted cameras with 3G that enable you to upload your photos on the go. This was a necessary step to compete with smartphones.

Anyway, cameras (as photographic-only devices) are on their way to hell in 2 or 3 years.
