Hardly.

The logo, the shape of the bottle, the fact that nearly any human capable of speech knows what it is, and if one is being offered, would more than likely accept?
I'd argue Manchester United or The Monarchy would give the Coke Brand a run for its money in terms of Global awareness.

I am not being deliberately contrary, but you're pretty close to both of those. I can say that other than a pic of HRM, I am unaware and probably could not point out a logo or other visual identifier for either.

Buckingham palace is a pretty big logo if you ask me.

And unless the pic had the guards in it? I wouldn't recognize the building. Just like I wouldn't expect you to have a recognition of the White House, the US Capitol or... actually, I would expect a wider recognition of Cinderlla's Castle than of Buckingham or the buildings I mentioned.

But you have heard of them, correct?
MUFC are stupidly big in East Asia, and one of the first things someone will think about when hearing 'Britain' will be HRH QE2.

I'm not really invested in this thread, the two just popped into my head as I was reading through, but in terms of global recognition I would expect 'Manchester United' to be up there, along with Coca Cola, Microsoft and McDonalds.

Really? You wouldn't expect most people to recognise the White House?
Also a little surprised you wouldn't recognise Buckingham Palace.
I think this may just be you. A lot of people, I assume, would disagree with you here.

Honestly, other than knowing they are a football team, no. And compared to many of my neighbors, I would be (in their eyes) an Anglophile. The logo for Manchester didn't even register as anything to me. I am not trying to be anti-anything, just that we all are subject to be a bit geocentric. Which is why I am amazed how a particularly shaped and logo'd glass bottle is almost instantly recognized by children in deep Africa, or other places where "something from the 1st world" is rare and an object of curiosity and possibly distrust.

Not even close mate. Coke is sold in virtually every country on the planet. Coke sells 1.6 billion servings of Coke every day. I can think of many people who have not heard of Manchester United (which is not known to almost everyone outside of Europe, besides soccer fans) and a decent sized amount of people who have not heard of the Monarchy in the form of isolated peoples in the Sakha Republic for example, or native tribes in South America might not have heard of it.

You have to a complete moron to not know that the UK has a monarchy considering we owned 1/4 of the world and invaded 90% of the countries.

Egocentricism and geocentricism.

EVERYONE is guilty of it.

Late Edit: the.... insidiousness of Coca Cola is what impresses me and makes me consider it to be the most commonly recognized "thing from somewhere else" on the planet.

Why would it be relevant to native tribes in South America or people living in isolated communities far north? Also, Britain's ability to project its values and desires onto the world is pretty much diminished now. I am actually quite a big fan of Britain and am in favour of Commonwealth countries becoming more British, but you are actually a joke for putting Britain on the same level of influence of America and China right now. Why don't you deal with the increasing ghettoization of Britain by foreigners and the raping of English children by Pakistanis before trying to tell us that Britain is so fabulous and has so much power and control?

I'm virtually 100% sure that the majority of 'fans' of Manchester United do not reside in Europe. Their fanbase is at 659 million (1 in 10 people in the world directly support the team), making them the most supported team in the most widely followed sport in the world. There are pockets of the world (see: North America and Australia) where football isn't really followed, but outside of that, I can't say you're really right in this claim of yours.

and a decent sized amount of people who have not heard of the Monarchy in the form of isolated peoples in the Sakha Republic for example, or native tribes in South America might not have heard of it.

& excuse my ignorance here, but do these tribes have access to a Coca Cola vendor?

I'd tend to agree. And in doing so, I would then be making a conscious effort to acknowledge the existence and affect of ego/geo-centricism and making a conscious effort to overcome it.

Anyone who says "I'm not affected by it" is denying that they are. The first step is accepted that everyone does it. After that, the individual can take steps to not fall back into the trap(s) it presents.

But saying "I can't be ego/geocentric, I'm from ______" is geocentric at its core. It's like saying "I can't be racist, I am _______".

What I said was, besides fans, no one outside of Europe knows them. Those fans might number in the hundreds of millions, but if you ask someone who isn't a soccer fan outside of Europe what Manchester United is, they'll just guess it's something to do with Britain. I seemed to have underestimated the number, but it is not anything close to Coke, which is truly the global brand. And to answer your second question, I am pretty sure. It can be found nearly everywhere across the globe no matter where you go. I found it fascinating that some Native tribes in Mexico use coke as holy water in their rituals.

Note I haven't claimed anything about Coke not being the most recognisable brand in the world. I initially just suggested two brands that are also globally known, which they are.
