The Black Chapter

Egocentricism and geocentricism.

"If it doesn't happen here, it doesn't happen."

EVERYONE is guilty of it.
I'd suggest that the US is a much more introverted nation in terms of global awareness than most of the developed world

I'd tend to agree. And in doing so, I would then be making a conscious effort to acknowledge the existence and affect of ego/geo-centricism and making a conscious effort to overcome it.

Anyone who says "I'm not affected by it" is denying that they are. The first step is accepted that everyone does it. After that, the individual can take steps to not fall back into the trap(s) it presents.

But saying "I can't be ego/geocentric, I'm from ______" is geocentric at its core. It's like saying "I can't be racist, I am _______".

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anything of the sort - of course I'm going to be aware of what is going on in the UK far more than I am of occurrences in Laos. Would you disagree however, with the suggestion that a German will know more about the politics of the rest of Europe, America and China more than the average American would of European and Chinese politics?

So much blind patriotism - mainly from Brits and Americans - in this thread. It does make me laugh when one says "we invented this and we invented that" - no, incorrect, you had nothing to do with the invention whatsoever, it just so happened that an intelligent person (or group(s) of intelligent people) whom were born in your country invented item x.

The country itself deserves very little credit and the people going around blaring out the phrase in quotation marks above deserve no credit at all - as, as I said, they did not contribute.

P.S. yes, yes, I'm sure somebody will quote my username on here at an attempt of pitiful humour - but having "UK" in my name is irrelevant to the facts I have stated in this thread.

Say, would Google be considered more iconic and recognizable than coke??

Not sure of its legitimacy but it has coke down as 5th most recognised brands.

Possibly. But my nominee is based on depth of penetration into cultures that are otherwise isolated as well as wide-spread knowledge in 1st-3rd world countries. The author did say "in no particular order".

I doubt that sub-saharan tribe members would recognize Google, but would know what you were holding if you pulled a bottle of Coke out of a cooler.

Why I picked that product, is that if you encounter someone from ANYWHERE else in the world, it is (IMO) the most likely thing that you will both be aware of. If you (and they) were to begin pulling things out of a box until one of you pulled out something that the other recognized.... I suspect that a bottle of Coca Cola would result in more "oh yeah!" pointing and smiling between strangers than anything else.

For all questions with answers unknown to you, the proper procedure is to assume the answer is peanut butter.

While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.

Coca Cola.

If that doesn't establish a foothold into nearly every life on the planet, I defy you to find me something else that does better.

This.

'Murica has the #1 Economy AND the strongest military. Your move, Sherlock.
Softpower > Hard power.

People like culture more than military.

Your navy is comprised of tugboats still, and politically you're a dot on the map. Culture doesn't equal power. It just means you're popular.

Unless you're talking about corporate power. America has numerous companies that can actively influence major governments, and the only British company I'm familiar with for being influential is BP. Of course, this is less of something to boast about, seeing that corporations tend to make government their -blam!-.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

Terrible source. It is odd that you found something that Piers Morgan said interesting. The bloke is a complete twat.

Also, stop creating 'Britain Vs. The World' threads.

Racism isn't wrong if it's funny.

I buy the top five. But I'd still doubt that more people recognize the Apple logo over the Nike logo, even for all of their immersion in society today.

I love Piers Morgan. He's completely clueless to the fact that everyone thinks/knows he's a complete -blam!-.

"It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me"

- Batman

Two of the best directors: Ridley Scott and Christopher Nolan, are both British (let's not forget about Alfred Hitchcock as well).

Britain has had the best music.

Britain has had the best authors.

For a country so small, it really is rather remarkable.

Im from England and you sir are wrong. Unfortunately we have fallen from our once great position. You can blame WW1 and the conservative party for that one.

You simply expanded too much. You can't control that much territory for any great period of time without suffering for it greatly. Even America's cheaper strategy of influence and bases isn't fairing so well. Best to hole up in your own nation and keep strong allies.

This is wrong. America and China have more power economically than Britain does, as well as military.
Paul stated that our economy is smaller and our military is among the world's best.

I do agree with you, although i didnt read the article so my point isnt really relevent to soft power. The reason we lost alot of "hard power" was WW1, we lost most of our trade to MURIKA during the war and never got it back.

On the soft power topic howver i agree completely. British music, tv and History is one of the best.

This is true for the infantry and air force, but you guys still need to piggy-back on other people. I'd say France has an overall more potent military force. You guys just make up for the lack of a potent navy with supermarines.

It's not something to boast about really. You guys just win by default. I can say first hand that your average American drama or comedy is commercialized brain-dead bull-blam!- that is only on television because they know some group of brain-dead suckers will enjoy it. Meanwhile british TV and movies tend to focus more on the artistic quality. Everything here is in it for and only the money.

Not just us who piggy-back (I'll admit Paul tends to be a bit UK -blam!- yeah), Supermarines only go to the 50s though? Is there something I'm missing?

Britain's military is the largest in Europe unless you want Russia involved and the 2nd strongest navy in the world.

So saying France is better is a bit silly.

You lack the ability for a large naval invasion. Even France has that capability with their dual carriers/transports. You don't even have a large carrier anymore.
