Don't rely on just school work to get you in. It is a VERY competitive industry, and breaking in is often the most difficult part. Having side projects or research projects can really help demonstrate the unique skills you can bring to a company. Understanding what skills are necessary for the position you're interested in helps a lot. And don't stop networking. The games industry is still fairly small, all things considered, and it doesn't hurt to know people.
I found this to be a section many people should pay attention to. Pretty much all professional jobs follow this pattern. I see a lot of folks thinking they are going to get a fancy degree and magically they are working for Bungie. (or equivalent dream job) The real fact of the matter is people want experienced, passionate professionals that can prove they won't let you down even before you started working for them. Unpaid internships are sometimes necessary, enroll in one while still attending college get basic experience. By competitive they really mean it is a competition. When you graduate and are accepting your diploma, look around you are witnessing the birth of new competitors.
I hope I didn't stray too far off topic. But I really found this to be true by my own personal experience.
