+1 for you good sir.

Such as Sociology or Psychology? Can someone tell me? Seriously, if the only problem is because there aren't a lot of job opportunities for it then lol.

The point of going to college is to learn. The sooner people understand this, the sooner we can get the damn education system out of teaching to the test.

Finally, someone on this forum who isn't close-minded as hell.

I am not even in college yet, I am just asking why people think it's so useless. I have other things I could probably major in, such as Chemistry or Biology, seeing as I did very well in both.

My considered majors:

Sociology
Psychology
Chemistry
Biology
Military Science (Possibly)

Try finding a job with it.

That's pretty much it. There's no marketable skills taught to you in a liberal arts degree.

  • 11.27.2012 1:32 PM PDT

It's not a real major, it doesn't specialize in any field that can net you an ACTUAL job.

The cake is a pie

Nothing. James Portnow suggests it for game design, actually. And what's wrong with understanding the humanities? Didn't Plato say "know thyself"?

  • 11.27.2012 1:32 PM PDT

Nothing at all. Art is the most important subject, anyway. Liberal arts has the potential to really open your mind.

Going to college is about learning skills for a future career. If your degree doesn't help you gain any applicable skills, then why are you majoring in it?

For all questions with answers unknown to you, the proper procedure is to assume the answer is peanut butter.

While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.

Nothing is wrong with it. It just isn't a good life choice, financially speaking.

Now get in the van.

The Black Chapter

My Lecturers keep telling me employers love a History degree.
Must be true :P

Because it's arty-farty nonsense and comprised of noddy-subjects. I'm a scientist (physicist, to be sort of precise) if you couldn't tell already...

If you stick around in school for a doctorate in Psychology, Sociology, or any of that stuff you've got good chances at a nice job.

Oh come off it. You can't honestly think that the social sciences can be summed up on YouTube? Do you have any idea what we've spent the last two centuries ramming our heads against?

What good is a good education if you can't use it to get a job to support yourself?

I plan on joining the Army as my early career, for a total of 6 years, then finishing it off with joining the CFD. You don't need any outstanding majors to get a job in either of those.

Lol indeed. Spending thousands of dollars to go to school and then not being able to use the skills you learned to turn a profit is definitely lotastic.

"Not a shred of evidence exists in favor of the idea that life is serious." - Brendan Gill

It's amazing how utterly opposed American culture seems to be to the idea of going to university to enrich understanding, knowledge, and perspective as opposed to just getting a fatter pay cheque.

It might be because of the insane amounts of money you guys have to pay for a degree though. It might force you to see it as a financial investment rather than a holistic one.

But what is the point in learning things if you're not going to use it for your career? That's a waste of an education.
