The point of going to college is to learn. The sooner people understand this, the sooner we can get the damn education system out of teaching to the test.

Finally, someone on this forum who isn't close-minded as hell.

While it does open your mind, it doesn't teach you anything you need to know for a job. Except for maybe teaching or writing. Also, if you were really determined, you could teach yourself pretty much anything you want regarding the liberal arts from books and documentaries and what not.

Because it's arty-farty nonsense and comprised of noddy-subjects. I'm a scientist (physicist, to be sort of precise) if you couldn't tell already...

You're arrogant to say the least. Understanding the universe is fine, but understanding people is just out of the question? What is one form of knowledge more valuable than the other? You hardly deserve to call yourself a scientist of any kind if that's what you think.

Seriously, if the only problem is because there aren't a lot of job opportunities for it then lol.
Lol indeed. Spending thousands of dollars to go to school and then not being able to use the skills you learned to turn a profit is definitely lotastic.
Lol for me at least. I must be complete idiot if the only reason why I am going to a university is to learn and not worry about getting a great paying job.

Listen, money isn't everything to me.

If you people are financially stable enough to afford these pointless degrees, go right ahead. I know I'm going to have to get one that will actually get me employed after college.

It's true. You wont get anywhere with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. In order to do any real work with a Psychology degree, you need at LEAST a Master's degree, if not a Doctorate.

But what is the point in learning things if you're not going to use it for your career? That's a waste of an education.

What's the point of a career? To contribute to your life in general. The contribution of knowledge, I think, is to life itself, not just to money making. Of course jobs are important, but we were stargazing and contemplating long before we were trading produce for labor. I suppose it's up to you which one you think is more important.

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself."
-Nietzsche

Majoring in liberal arts means you want to specialize in something which is worthless to society.

If you do this, -blam!- you.

How do you expect to pay for rent, bills, car, phone, etc, if you don't have a decent job? Mommy and daddy [and the government] can't float you forever...

People that go into law tend to major in liberal arts, and good lawyers make bank. Also, those majors are easy and a higher gpa means a shot at good law schools, but that's not the point.

For some jobs a liberal arts mindset is necessary.

Military pays a -blam!- load and Firefighters make some good money too. I plan on doing both. You don't need a degree of any sorts to be in either.

I would disagree, but I see where you're coming from. In order to make any huge contribution to the progress of psychology, you have to get a doctoral education. But learning from the subject requires no such thing, and the benefits of learning from it, I think, are both vast and subtle.

Agreed

Physics is my main game too but that doesn't stop me from maintaining an interest in the humanities. Literature, music and philosophy are just three of the fulfilling things to explore.

That said, my interaction with philosophy has been passing at best. I need a good place to start really. Could you be a help with that Ultermarto? You're into philosophy that stuff aren't you?

Haha, "understanding people" - yeah, okay, it's nothing that those who take a proper subject like biological sciences (neuroscience in the "understanding people" case) can't do. "Liberal arts" and the like are subjects which one can take as a part time hobby - the contact hours of a degree course in such a subject would allows this.

As for the last sentence of your comment - I do not see the relevance nor why you deem yourself fit to decide whether I'm a scientist or not. I am a scientist, I know I am a scientists, my colleagues in academia know I'm a scientist, the scientific community knows I'm a scientist - thus, your opinion is irrelevant.

Anybody can think critically. You don't need a degree to think.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Please allow me to introduce Myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

Because you have to get further schooling to become useful. Unfortunately, the job market has become very specialized. That means you have to come prepackaged, ready to work in whatever field you choose. It was before that people were hired and trained on the job, and what was needed was critical thinkers. Nowadays you need to be trained in your discipline and only trained in specific company procedures.

So, if you major in a liberal arts field, you will need further schooling to get a job.

I have a BA in history. I use it in the random conversation, and that's it. I use my MBA daily.
