Plato also thought that all poetry was irrational and had to be inspired by muses.

Such as Sociology or Psychology? Can someone tell me? Seriously, if the only problem is because there aren't a lot of job opportunities for it then lol.

This is pretty much the reason.

This is the liberal arts? I thought that these were the social sciences aren't the liberal arts, dance, drama, media, film studies, music, music tech, and art?

Which is why I was referring specifically to northern Native American tribes. I would take a loving, happy society that lived in tents to a dark, cynical society that lives in houses any day.
They also lived in an exponentially SMALLER society, where things like that are possible. The US has 300-some million people in it. Such a community cannot exist that big.

+1 for you good sir.

Its not because there aren't a lot of job opportunities with those, its because the majority of people go into it, and they don't realize that there are already a surplus of people in that field. Chemistry and Biology aren't liberal arts. Psychology has little effect on our society, so its a complete waste of money in my opinion
I never said Chemistry or Biology were libera arts. I was just telling everyone other choices I had in mind.

1600's Europe is your idea of a utopia?
No. I was using it as an example of how we've progressed over 400 years. I do not believe in "Utopia" it is simply impossible thanks to human nature.

They lived all across America, and had limited agriculture, which didn't lead to surplus food and overpopulation.

That's what we need.

Human nature is to love, so a utopia is possible.

And because of their lack of advancement, got wiped out. That's what happens if you don't keep up with the rest of the pack, someone picks you off. Not to mention you don't serve humanity well by sitting down in one spot, not building up immunity to diseases or advancing the greater good. That's just asking for extinction.

LOL this dude actually thinks humans by nature are loving and compassionate?

Wrong era bro.

I'm not joking. What, you think it is in our nature to hate each other? To go to war and kill each other? I disagree. Time and time again, it has been shown that humans would rather shake hands than shake fists.

Yes, they lived all across America, but in smaller communities with limited interaction with eachother. That simply doesn't work when there's a population of 7 BILLION people on this planet. We live in a global society. We can't just live in small communities anymore; it doesn't work.

Hmmm... My suspicions have been confirmed - you "hate scientists". With this in mind, let me guess:

- You are deeply religious?
- You are an arts student?
- You think that the Earth is 6000 years old, made by god and that all geological evidence proving otherwise is "false"?
- You believe in the backwards thinking religious belief of "intelligent design" (i.e. "creationism") and you do not accept evolution?

I mean, come on, you "hate scientists"? Do you have absolutely no clue about what on Earth is going on? Do you not realise how utterly ridiculous and foolish that statement is?
-Nope, militant Agnostic.
-Yes.
-No.
-LOL, no.

I hate what scientists have become.

I am genuinely surprised - it would seem you are an anomaly, perhaps it goes deeper than this: have you lost a relative who was ill and the doctors couldn't save? Or maybe it's as trivial as failing your science exams at school and then blaming it all on scientists? There must be some proper reason as to why you "hate scientists", I am intrigued (and disgusted, of course).

They got wiped out by other humans. Humans who were doing it wrong. "Advancement" and "progress" are words we throw around to get away with doing terrible things. The goal of humans is not to progress, but to be happy and to love.

And then go right back to killing that bastard over the hill. Our goal is selfish to survival. If something interferes with this, we remove them, permanently. If someone else has something that we want, we take it with force. 'Love' does not technically exist. It's a chemical reaction in the brain between parties resulting in them wanting to reproduce and continue the species and pass on their genes.

"How can anyone be enlightened? Truth after all is so poorly lit." - Rush

I think it's profoundly foolish for those of you arguing either extreme -- that the liberal arts (which I would define as Humanities, history, sociology, etc) are either the most important or worthless.

Is it too radical for you people to realize that having different people specializing in different things benefits society as a whole? A society full of nothing but science and business majors would be a bleak one indeed.

There is no "goal" of being a human other than that of any other living species, to survive and reproduce

Perhaps "hate scientists" is too harsh. I disagree with the idea of science. "Sci", meaning "know". The problem is that we try to know too much. Some things in this universe can't and shouldn't be explained. Instead of spending billions of dollars exploring space, we should first create a better world here on earth.

We wouldn't have cancer if it weren't for all the radiation, and all the GMO's we have in food.
