No, you just didn't notice it before. You're paying attention to the wrong things.

I'm your biggest fan!

OP's entering his enlightenment phase. Next couple of years are going to be tough for you, kid. This forum will also turn you into a bitter old cynic, so I'd think about regulating your exposure.

Send me a private message if you want to talk or have any questions.

Interesting - define "what makes us human" in those terms, a biological definition would suffice; we're not really a "special species", just another species on this tiny planet.
Yep nothing special at all except for the fact we are the only species that have God like capabilities of creation and destruction. You make me laugh at your perception of humanity, thats if that is the sum of your ideals.

Anyways, the truth is- Death and war has less casualties and has been on a steady decline. I encourage you to do some research of violence world wide. That isn't to say our "humanness" has declined. We are becoming more integrated with technology and more globalized each passing year. An argument that the more connected we are the more exposed we become to other people's struggles and hardships. Just remember these same struggles and hardships existed 100 years ago to 1000 years ago.

As a compassionate species we see something on the news and we think about it and worry, or perhaps let it dictate the way we act towards one another. Fear mongering is a political tool that sways the populations under Government to behave a certain way. The cliche example is 911. I use it because I assume it is the most familiar with this crowd.

Put into context 911 wasnt that large of a human tragedy, the death toll was fairly low considering the genocides that have occurred in Africa, Russia (Stalinist gulags) that co-exist as events. However, 911 was imprinted into the soul of the masses to rile up an American population for unjustified war. With proper exposures any minor event can seem like a disaster. Did 911 effect all of America? Not at all, but it did once all of America was properly exposed to it. Pearl Harbor was the same ordeal, gulf of tonkin, etc. Now take that into account when you become full of fear and loathing occurs.

Since we had a brief look into how mob mentality works, what is the primary functioning or cause of the mob to adhere to a minority opinion? You reach the majority dehumanizing populations with technology and media. What I think is really making you depressed is your inability to change the world around you and the lack of interactivity we as a people put up with because some institution or machine now does it for us.

Example given- You don't grow your food anymore in the backyard because the supermarket (institution) has it all for you. Or you may roll through the drive through of some modern fast food place and get a cheap meal. Either way it takes away from what the human experience is meant to be. It takes away personal responsibilities until the majority of the population has clock-work like schedules and lack of individual freedoms. Becoming more of a cog in a gear and less human. Thats what the advancement of civilization makes you trade in. If the collective heads all had their own agenda, nothing would be civilized or properly functioning. It may be ironic that the more "advanced" society becomes the less human an individual becomes.

Hope this helps

What on Earth was the point of that whole random rant then? I see no underlying point made here nor do I see the relevance to my post - just because we possess so-called "weapons of mass destruction" (we couldn't destroy the Earth itself as a planet, "just" the biosphere - and even then, life would emerge from the chaos again) does not mean we are of a higher order than the set of "species", we are, undeniably, just yet another species.
