Subject: So, why didn't the Empire shield the exhaust port?

Because it was an exhaust port?
If I shoot the tailpipe of your car, your car doesn't explode.

Design it in such a way that one hot won't fatally damage the station.

If I shoot it with a missile, it will. (I know...I know, but I had to.)

They may not even have been aware that the exhaust port was a weakness.

It's not exactly an obvious flaw. Thus the reason the Rebels need to examine the plans to Death Star, aka what the movie was abut the fist two acts.

Online Gaming's pretty much like a zombie movie. There are a lot of mindless idiots roaming around but you find some survivors on the way.

Either way, it's not like they just flew in without resistance and dropped a bomb in the hole. The turrets were there for a reason. Both of Luke's wingmen were also taken down, if I remember correctly.

This, and the fact it was nigh impossible to hit bang on target without the assistance of the force.

Maybe exhaust fumes can't go through the shield?

Being alone.
You're a mod, you should be used to that.

I dare you to cover your fan exhaust ports after an hour of playing Crysis maxed out O.o

It was an aesthetic choice by the architect.

There was most likely little to no architect's working on the Death Star, only engineers.

I wasn't being serious.

They ran out of building material so they left it open.

Death Star Engineer: "I mean, its not like some small fighter will launch a missile down this thing anyway amirite?"

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

They were shielded. They were ray-shielded. The idea being that any precision weapon capable of hitting the port would have to be a beam/particle weapon coming from any platform capable of carrying such a weapon. The Death Star weapon, its capability of carrying/deploying Star Destroyers and thousands of interceptors made it reasonable to assume that no ship or squadron could survive to get close enough or even a single shot off.

The idea of a bomber (getting through the DS's defenses, support fleet, interceptors and surface guns and then on a fast attack run being capable of then) putting a warhead of sufficient yield through the port was past the point of "reasonable precaution".

Well, obviously. Still wouldn't of been an architect.

Well, when your tailpipe leads to a magicy sciency super-reactor, and you're firing what's most likely a nuclear warhead...

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.” – Psalms 46:1-3

Minor Oversight, happens in all construction sites.

Which is why, Tarkin was told during the attack, "Sir, we have analyzed their attack and there IS some risk. Perhaps you should evacuate."

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

But still. That's a pretty big oversight. I mean, its an Achilles heal to be sure. One shot and the place explodes? You would think they would either eliminate it entirely from the design, or do a better job protecting it.

Also when it comes to canon throughout the Star Wars verse, I tend to forgo how the events in the movies unfolded, and only the events happened, but the methods in which they were executed was more logical and less cinematic insanity.

Recon Number 54 -
If they are still looking, then while holding the snarl, I let drool start to drip from my mouth, I stand, curl my fingers into claws and with a hunched over crouch, I then make slow and deliberate steps towards them. When I get close enough, I let them hear my agonized and gasping growls and then, if they continue to stare, when I get within arm's reach? I kiss them on the nose, and run away giggling.

Because the death star wouldn't have had a weakness, and the rebel alliance would have been crushed and humiliated.

Nobody wants to watch that. That's a terrible plot.

I would want to see that, I like it when the rebels lose.

Pure Insanity
The point of war is not to die for one's clan, but it's to make the other bastard die for his
Right before you die, there is always a chance to save yourself, sieze that chance and live to fight another day
The best way to kill someone is to fight them with the same weapons they use and make them know you are better than them, not because of superior weaponry, but because of superior skill.
Hidden in the shadows, Clothed in camo, Armed to the teeth. Hunting.

They can't just remove the exhaust port.

Also, nothing is perfect.

You can plan and engineer something to be the best it can be, but it will never be perfect.

RESPOND TO MY RESPONSE!

The force wasnt a variable in construction.

  • 11.27.2012 3:54 PM PDT

The only pilot that could make that shot had to be strong in the force and a skilled pilot. Grand Moff Tarkin didn't think they existed anymore. So the only one that could make the shot was basically Luke.

Bro, I can pull off that shot all the time. All I just need is a lot of quarters.

This. That doesn't happen if you close the vent.
