Because the death star wouldn't have had a weakness, and the rebel alliance would have been crushed and humiliated.

Nobody wants to watch that. That's a terrible plot.

I would want to see that, I like it when the rebels lose.
Imperial scum!

The Galaxy was technically better off under the Empire. Sure there was the enslavement of the wookiees, but Palpatine had built up the military specifically to take on the impending Vong invasion. And then the Alliance crippled the Empire, made a Republic....aaaaand trillions died.

Dues Ex Macina

No it isn't. Getting the Death Star plans to the Rebellion was an important plot point.
That's a Dues Ex Macina.

"We live in a special time; the only time where we can observationally verify that we live in a very special time" - Lawrence Krauss.

I was a finalist :P

They thought that all members of the attacking fleet of rebel starships had the same skill set as Porkins :P

RIP Logan ~B.B.

Also, didn't they mention in the briefing that it was shielded to some extent so they would need to use photon torpedoes?

*Proton

From a science standpoint, I don't understand how the idea of "proton torpedos" would even work.

In the canon, it's effectively jibber jabber for extremely powerful most-likely-nuclear explosive.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

Ray Shielded. So, I would imagine, that beam/particle weapons would be ineffective. The shield would allow matter/exhaust to pass, but not a focused energy pulse.

Which if those ports were all over and used for maneuvering in 3 dimensions, would be a reasonable defense/design. Especially considering your point of a single fighter making it to the trench (past the main arms, the surface batteries, the picket ships and the interceptors) seemed very understandable.

Or a lightsaber, blaster, or how their ships move for that matter. But that isn't the point of sci-fi
