"People that drive automatics...want to pay as little attention as possible to what they're doing."
Quite the opposite. Not having to focus on gear shifting lets the driver be more aware of what is going on around him, lets the driver focus on more important things, and frees a hand in case of a need to swerve out of the path of obstacles.Except in practice that's not true at all. A manual forces you to pay attention to your speed; you can't just accidentally accelerate to high speed without realising it. Every automatic driver I've ever witnessed just zones out and ignores what the car is doing, because it's shifting for them.
Also, the whole "extra hand for swerving argument" is retarded. Shifting doesn't take that long to do, and any swerving you do in a low-speed urban environment can be done one-handed anyways.

I've always found it odd how insulting fans of manual transmissions can be. The idea that people that drive automatic are "lazy" or don't enjoy driving is ludicrous and baseless.Probably because automatics are inferior in every way, suck all of the enjoyment out of driving, and contribute to lazy and dangerous driving practices.
