I use an automatic because I'm not a knob-head who thinks it's cool to handicap himself. Just because you drive a stick doesn't make you more awesome.
Having more control over the car and being more connected to how it operates isn't a "handicap." People that drive automatics are just lazy and want to pay as little attention as possible to what they're doing.

Red vs Blue Fan. Doc is the best!

I drive wind-up cars. It gives me more control, and I think I'm a little bit better then all of you.

Automatic because it's my family's car. Yeah, I'm a new driver. I can drive well enough now though so I think it's time I go for my road test.

I drive in an urban area. Do you know how tiresome it would get to be constantly shifting?

I know that it isn't very tiring because I drive in an urban area in my 1991 miata. If you know anything about Miatas, you know they have incredibly short gear ratios, which means you shift a helluva lot. I also have installed a short-throw shifter, which means I have less leverage, and require more muscle to shift.

A short throw shifter and I shift far more often than most people, making it into 5th gear as low as 30 miles per hour if I feel like getting good MPG.

Do I get tired of shifting? No. Never. The only thing I don't like about my manual is that I can't eat while driving... however at the same time I will never ever end up in an accident because I was distracted by my food, phone, cigarette, drink, or anything else along those lines, while driving.

Edit:

There's nothing wrong with driving an Automatic. I learned on an automatic, and enjoyed it before I learned how to drive manual.

There is, however, something wrong with arguing that automatic is safer or better. It isn't. It's just easier, and if that's your cup of tea, you're entitled to drink it. Not everybody is an auto enthusiast.

I would much rather have a short shift that's heavy than a foot of movement, no matter how light. I have short gear ratios too. 1st redlines at 25mph, 2nd redlines at 45, 3rd at 70...

Both. Have a manual 4-speed 91 Dodge pick-up. I drive my automatic 2004 Dodge Neon when I'm feeling lazy.

with the rest of the automatic drivers ;3

on the subject of the rx8... who the f thought lowering the redline in the automatic version to 7500 from 9000 rpm was a good idea?? its a damn rotary engine!

But in manual mode I can choose when to shift without the messiness of having a clutch! Lol but I never use this unless I'm racing.

I believe the redline is 8500 for manuals, so it's not a huge difference (and I have no idea what constitutes the difference between the auto and manual engines that causes this). Either way, 7500 for max RMP's is heads over almost all other cars out there, and the engine sounds beast when it does get that high. =)

Meh, its not like its got one of the cool lightning fast double clutch transmissions, its gonna shift just as slow as in regular mode.

No, the redline is at 9000 in the manuals. there is no difference in the engines like you think, I have no idea what mazdas reasoning for the decrease was. Its kind of a big deal though, since rotary engines were designed to be revved up crazy high. youre only losing potential by not spinning it up to 9000, and with the lack of torque you need to rev it that high really get it goin.

Depends on which my dad is driving at the time...I can't exactly afford a car of my own. We have an auto, and a manual.

Dude, whatan intresting question...

  • 11.27.2012 10:58 PM PDT

i drive both.

but if you think your car absolutely has to have a manual, you're overcompensating for something.

Black Water Ops

Manual definitely keeps my mind on the road a lot more and is defs a lot more fun to drive, but right now I'm driving auto since I could only find my truck in auto for the price that I did.

~Thread-killer~

Manual is far superior to automatics, in my opinion.

The only reason I'm driving an auto right now is because I had a hard time finding a standard trans. truck , and the truck I ended up getting had the MDS system and I got a helluva deal on the price. Kelly blue book listed the truck to be $19k, but i got it for $11.1k.

I do get the pleasure of driving a manual Dodge Cummins 1 ton dually every now and then, aling with a manual Nissan Hardbody. Both are very fun to drive.

Are you 10? Or just stupid? You realize that outside of 'murica the manual transmission is pretty much the standard? Many cars, mine included, are not even manufactured with an automatic transmission option.
