I'm an Anarchist. I don't need a government to be a good person, but I'm glad it's here because some of you clearly do.

I use an automatic because I'm not a knob-head who thinks it's cool to handicap himself. Just because you drive a stick doesn't make you more awesome.Having more control over the car and being more connected to how it operates isn't a "handicap." People that drive automatics are just lazy and want to pay as little attention as possible to what they're doing.
I drive in an urban area. Do you know how tiresome it would get to be constantly shifting?
I know that it isn't very tiring because I drive in an urban area in my 1991 miata. If you know anything about Miatas, you know they have incredibly short gear ratios, which means you shift a helluva lot. I also have installed a short-throw shifter, which means I have less leverage, and require more muscle to shift.
A short throw shifter and I shift far more often than most people, making it into 5th gear as low as 30 miles per hour if I feel like getting good MPG.
Do I get tired of shifting? No. Never. The only thing I don't like about my manual is that I can't eat while driving... however at the same time I will never ever end up in an accident because I was distracted by my food, phone, cigarette, drink, or anything else along those lines, while driving.
Edit:
There's nothing wrong with driving an Automatic. I learned on an automatic, and enjoyed it before I learned how to drive manual.
There is, however, something wrong with arguing that automatic is safer or better. It isn't. It's just easier, and if that's your cup of tea, you're entitled to drink it. Not everybody is an auto enthusiast.
