Our school is going to have a men's volleyball team this year, and I'm going to try out. In PE, I always did very good at volleyball. I am a junior, so I will hopefully make varsity. I have a few questions though.
1. I'm 16 and 5'11", is this tall enough?
2. I don't jump very high, but I suppose after weight training and practice every day, I'll start to be able to jump higher. Can I still play, even though I don't jump that high?
3. Since this will be our first year, I'm kind of concerned about our varsity team getting annihilated. We'll be playing people who have been playing competitively for four years, whereas it will be our first.
4. Any idea what position I will play? Like I said, 5'11", can't jump high, but I'm quick, and have good reaction times.
Thanks bros, but I won't be surprised if this gets barely any replies, since men's volleyball isn't too popular.
Yes OP I'm a senior and I've played all throughout high school. To address your points;
1. There's no real necessary height to play, it's all about power and explosiveness if you're playing in the front row.
2. If playing in the front row being able to jump high is a great advantage especially at your height. I'd start training by doing plyometrics as soon as possible. Look up exercises online and figure out a good routine for you.
3. It really depends, I'm guessing this will be everyone's first year so you might as well be a freshman team with a little more coordination. However, it also depends on the skill level of schools around you. If they've had volleyball programs for a long time then you most likely will have a losing record.
4. If you have a good reaction time then maybe playing libero/defensive specialist is a good idea, considering you'll probably be one of the shorter people on the team. But I've seen some amazing front row hitters who were on the shorter side but had great hops.
edit: it's nice to see so many volleyball players :) it's really an amazing sport
Other schools around us have Men's Volleyball, but we don't. I'm pretty sure we are getting it this spring, or next spring.
