Subject: WW2 Russia "strategies"?

Did the Russians in WWII really have any strategy besides "lol we've got millions Germans will run out of ammo eventually"?

  • 11.27.2012 7:14 PM PDT

Basically yeah.. they would send in recruits unarmed and tell them to pick up guns too.

Sometimes I am tempted to quit gaming. I can no longer play without seeing ponyphags, horrendously bad teammates and mexicans.

Gaming community, I want you to know that you suck.

For all questions with answers unknown to you, the proper procedure is to assume the answer is peanut butter.

While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.

Throw more vodka at our soldiers, and throw our soldiers at the Germans!

That was basically it. Give as many as you can weapons and ammo and just keep throwing more troops at the enemy. The Germans would (and did) eventually run out of supplies. Then, they could be (and were) overrun with hordes of Russians.

Yeah. It's called human wave attack and force concentration.

You guys have no idea what your talking about. In some cases human wave tactics were used early on but as they fought and learned they developed tactics.

Operation saturn and Uranus come to mind, the Russians allowed the Germans to become stuck in Stalingrad in grueling urban combat, what the Germans called "Ratenkrieg" or rat war.

Germans were trained for fighting over wide swaths of land and fast attacks not urban slow combat.

When the German 6th army was fighting at Stalingrad the Russians built up on there flanks with massive amounts of troops and armor and surrounded the 6th army cutting it off forever and effectively destroying it.

The Russians were not to be messed with and they deserve to be respected.

K. I'm the only one throwing out real strategies that the Red Army used in World War 2, but nope...I'm wrong...

Way more to it then that. The red army showed tactical brilliance at its strategic level as the war progressed. General Zhukov was one of history's greatest generals. Read some history before you mindlessly comment.

No you're not, I think that wasn't directed at you, just vaguely worded.

Russians excelled at urban combat, in Stalingrad and elsewhere they would plan elaborate ambushes and booby traps, they would retake positions lost during the day under the cover of night, they would fight to the death knowing what would happen if they surrendered.

Or the infantry would ride on tanks, spraying into adjacent buildings.

Well, they ended up on the winning side, but millions of them died. I'd say so, but it depends on your perspective.

Also, you guys are expecting the Flood to be too mature, especially in a thread concerning WWII Russia.

Somewhat off topic: Mosin-Nagants are incredibly fun to shoot.

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.”
― Albert Einstein

The primary Russian defensive strategy was a line strategy. There would be a line of defense every couple dozen kilometers, when the Germans punched through a line of defense, the remaining forces from that line would fall back into the one behind it, therefore strengthening it. This occurred from Poland until just a couple of Kilometers outside of Moscow where the accumulated defense was a able to hold the Germans at bay.

Also, the Barbarossa campaign of 1941 came as a complete surprise to the Soviets. Nevertheless, they reacted swiftly, particularly in the civilian aspect. As the army was being defeated and gave ground at an amazing speed, a gigantic operation was staged to move the economic capacity from the Western areas that were about to be overrun, to Eastern regions that were out of reach for the Germans, like the Ural. Entire factories, including their labour force, were simply moved out of reach from the Germans, and what couldn't be taken was destroyed ("Scorched earth"). Thus, even though huge territories were captured by the Germans, the production potential of the Soviet economy was not correspondingly harmed, and the factories shifted to mass production of military equipment quickly, soon outproducing the German economy.
