Subject: Map Design

I don't see you doing anything to help our country.
Except sitting at home, naked, eating twinkies, rubbing your hands together going "Heh. Target Destroyed. Mission Accomplished." Oh wait. that's not helping.

Most of you have probably thought of this or uttered these exact words "Why are these maps so awful?". While I can't answer that question for you I would like to discuss it. What exactly happened between the era of MW2, Halo 3, the era of good maps, to now. There have just been no balanced or fluid playing maps put into multiplayer games since around 08', so I have to ask what happened? No games seem to be spared from this trend, Halo Reach, MW3, Crisis 2, Halo 4, Black OP II...It goes on. I can think of maybe one good map in each of those games, why is that? In Halo 3 I can think of...well all of them. Same goes for MW2. What is going on with the developer community?

I would also like to make one addition, the battlefield games seem to be spared from this trend, so they must be doing something right.

Sometimes I am tempted to quit gaming. I can no longer play without seeing ponyphags, horrendously bad teammates and mexicans.

Gaming community, I want you to know that you suck.

All developers need to do is make up some detailed natural spaces and test to see which ones work best. Headlong felt like a random area of the city turned into a playspace, and that's why it was good. Don't block off any hiding places with invisible walls.

Your 'beliefs' mean less than dick to me.

Map design is tied to game mechanics. If the game itself plays awful, the maps will play awful too. If the game mechanics are up to snuff, then the maps tend to take care of themselves.

I think the better maps are more flat in terrain and more leveled.

No tunnels everywhere... Not cluttered... And certainly not too many rocks.
And not littered with cover.

Lockout.. Is flat, but is vertical.
Wizard... Is flat.
Haven... Is flat.
.........
Abandon... To cluttered.
Meltdown... TUNNELS AND ROCK FEST
Swordbase... Too vertical.
Assembly... To cluttered at the bottom level.

I think it has to do with the gameplay as well as the maps. In Halo 3 and MW2, the gameplay and map flow work together to produce something... glorious.

  • 11.27.2012 8:30 PM PDT

The real question is symetrical or asymetrical.

While true, Sandtrap would be amazing in any Halo game. It is just overall the perfect BTB map. How does one achieve that level of perfection?

Color The Sky
Lost In Las Vegas
Missed You

Remember all
The sadness and frustration
And let it go

In all fairness, Guardian was a great map. Isolation was poo, though. Both had a great atmosphere, though.

I don't know, and it's rare when it happens, but when it does it's amazing. I think when the gameplay is simpler, the maps are simpler. The more you add, the more convoluted the gameplay is, and the worse the map. Battlefield isn't so complex, and the maps are good, y'know?

UMAD?
Those are good maps.. Besides Epitaph and debatebly Snowbound.

I personally think it's the "you don't realize what you had 'till it's gone" effect.

MW2 maps are only glorified by the community after MW3 rolled around.

They weren't "good" when Halo 3 was the go-to game. People complained about them constantly.

Yeah, they were not too good. All the ones I can remember had some big exploit one way or another.

But they were good maps! I also don't recall much hate on those maps, but that might have been because I was mostly playing Halo 3 durring the Halo era rather than complaining about it.

EDIT: Just looked up those maps. All of them worked out exellently for some gametypes, but I could imagine them not working well with others.

I think DLC is a pretty cool guy. eh give us new mapz and doesnt afraid of anything.

None of MW2 maps were great. Black Ops 1 had some amazing maps and so far Black Ops 2 also has some fantastic maps. Also Halo 3 only had a few good maps, although they are better than Reach/4s maps.
