Before Bungie left Microsoft in 2007 really. I mean it was probably a nugget of an idea but since then.

Nowthat picture makes so much sense. With the white circle outside of earth representing the traveller.

My old Halo 2 account is Devil brothers

I'm guessing at least 5 or so years considering that they're basically creating a brand new universe for Destiny.

For those who wish to contact me on Xbox LIVE, my main account is "The 7th Taco", and the one linked with my profile here is only a backup.

You know it's also been a wallpaper in the "Love, Bungie" tab on the mobile app for iPod for quite a while now.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

If Destiny is a child of Jones, I suspect that this has been brewing in Jason's noggin for quite some time.

He's been out of the spotlight for a while, and never really was one to look for attention, so following his projects/activities tends to involve a lot of guesswork and blank-filling.

If I am not mistaken, Halo 2 was the last project he was a creative lead on. I believe (but could EASILY be wrong) on or about the time of Halo 2, he spent a good deal of time "offloading" his concepts and visions of that universe to others (Staten, McLees, O'Connor, etc.) for them to "carry on" and he then began focusing on a then barely whispered of "mystery project".

If you consider Marathon, then Myth, then Oni to be early universe creation efforts and then Halo to be an attempt at a magnum-opus, then perhaps Destiny is Jones second magnum that he was compelled to start once he saw that Halo had enough inertia to be self-sustaining and directed/steered by others who loved/understood the project.

Oh well, just an old fan spouting speculation. I certainly don't know anything. In my life, I think that I only spotted Jones once at Pax 06 (he appeared like he was trying to blend in) and have nothing but the same news and sources that the rest of us have. But I don't mind dreaming and wondering.

Didn't Jason Jones also not work on Halo 3? I could be mistaken, but if that's true, he could've been doing this the whole time, meaning this thing could be well over 6 or 7 years into production/conceptual design.

Let me see if I can easily find how he was listed in the various credits.

But if my memory is working, CE and H2 were his "babies" and he took a more managerial, story guidance, and a less "hands on" role in any subsequent titles. I do remember hearing mentions about "something other than Halo" before H3 came out.

Let me dig and see what the credits listed his role as. Unless someone beats me to it.

I don't believe that there really is a title for him. Founder? Does what he wants? Creator of universes?

Hard to put those on a name badge and keep a straight face.

We got it! Sure, maybe not, but I think that's a pretty good indication that this thing was pretty far into development when ODST rolled around. Hell, to have a central plot device as The Traveler already established it must've been pretty far into conceptual design and storyboarding at the very least.

Well that definitely explains to me why there was such a sudden but subtle drop in quality since Halo 2 :/

I remember reading an article (a little after Halo 3 was released) that Jason was working on something new. This bit of information involved an interview with Harold Ryan. The game's been in concept stage for quite a while. As for his contribution to Halo. That pretty much ended with Halo 2; aside from general feedback he offered designers afterwards.

Staten too had less of a hand in the development of Halo's main storyline after Halo 2. He had almost nothing to do with Reach's storyline and had less to do with Halo 3's plot than Halo 2.

So, at this point, we can place the beginning of the production/conceptual design of Destiny anywhere from 8 years ago (November 2004, just after Halo 2 was released, after which Jason Jones was given no credit for having worked on a Halo game for 5 years), to 4 years ago (about a year before the release of ODST; this is assuming that some time between September 2008 and September 2009 brainstorming, storyboarding, and conceptual design on Destiny had progressed to a point that they were able to add an Easter Egg about a crucial, and concrete plot device before the game shipped, which is a bit slim, IMO).

So thats' a 4 year window. Even if you take the mean of that you're still looking at a game that's 6 years in development in one way or another. They could easily be working on the first Comet by now, especially since we know Multiplayer is up and running and there is a working build of the Destiny at this point as per DeeJ saying that the Bungie team spent Bungie Day playing the game against one another.

At this stage I would say they would barely be at pre-alpha stage. New IPs are very hard to make in this age, especially with a new engine. Bungie has a team of roughly seven writers writing the story for Destiny. Halo 1 had roughly 3 writers, Jason included.

1 year to launch? You think they're that far back? (This coming from a guy who has no concept of the timeline of game development, yours truly.)

@ Crazy

Well that's just my hypothesis. If you were here around the time Reach was leaked, someone posted pics of pre-alpha content 6-8 months before launch. I still think they are aiming for a 2014 windows (I could be dead wrong of course) but even if the game comes out in 2013, pre-alpha or alpha isn't necessarily seen as far behind.
