Let's not pretend like these are isolated incidents. [User X] doesn't harass [User Z] over a day's time, and that night [User Z] kills themselves. I'd wager that the victims do as much as they can to distance themselves from the bullies, including but not limited to blocking communication.
I guess what I don't get is how the existing legal framework isn't sufficient to stop this kind of -blam!-. I mean, the way this is described, it's basically stalking and harassment. There are laws against that. Why aren't these people in jail and their victims still alive?
Because I don't know any state that would lock up a 12 year-old.
I'm from Texas and what were you saying? :-P
But seriously, you don't have to put them in jail, but there are options. Special schools, juvenile detention, cut off their internet access (this happens to adults, don't see why not kids).

In Ontario we have the CFSA, which in this case those who were harassing her could have been prosecuted/the situation solved by legal means. Age 12-18.

Once it gets to the point of actual harassment, threatening, or stalking there is legal action to be taken. The bullying monicker is being done to death.

I'm hated by many, but loved by none.

The reason bullying is still even happening is because the government doesn't believe it's a problem. But it is, and it's a big one. Teenagers are committing suicide because of it and more people suffer. The government should make it so bullying can be a chargeable offense.

Eh...

It'd have to be a very very strict definition. What is considered bullying and what is just a kid being a dick varies from person to person. Some people have thicker skin than others and the last thing we need is more sheltered kids and overprotective parents trying to sue because they/their kid got his foot stepped on in the hallway. There are mean people everywhere and people regardless of age need to learn how to either ignore it and not let it get to them or stand up for themselves and fight back at some point, you can't protect kids from everything. That being said when the bullying gets to the point where, were it an adult, it would be considered harassment or assault, then yeah I agree there should be fines, mandatory therapy or juvie if its bad enough for the offending kid, but like I said someone would have to sit down and write up a formal specific definition of what is considered an offense and what is not.

And this is coming from someone who was bullied quite a bit in school.

Bullying will never stop. It's always going to be an issue that we cannot fix.

Pity she died, but natural selection. People need to learn how to deal with stuff like this without killing themselves.

Seriously, this is becoming so frequent now it's ridiculous. It's horrible to see any human life lost due to something so trivial as bullying. I'm not surprised to see stories like this anymore, and quite frankly it's so frequent, I'm caring less and less.

Clearly this is an issue that needs to be resolved, but a lot of the times the school administration is part of the problem.

Yep. I was bullied in 4th and 5th grade. It started off fairly minor but it got progressively worse with time. The school administration totally botched the situation and ended up basically asking me to leave the school. From what I hear, the bully went on to mess up another kid... and the school responded the exact same way to his situation!

Do that, and you will have children being charged for everything under the sun. Bullying isn't a chargeable offense because bullying isn't a single, definitive action/set of actions. That would be like making lying illegal just because some lies are more destructive than others.

What needs to happen is that people stop using the term bullying for everything bad that happens to a child at the hand of another child, an actually discerns between what is "being picked on" and what is being assaulted, harassed, threatened, etc.
