Subject: Destiny: What do YOU want from it?

Memento mori.

TL;DR: What do you want out of Destiny? Gameplay-wise, graphically, story-wise, anything.

Wow. It has been an age and a half since I last posted something.

Anyways, in light of the recent leaks(poor Bungie), I thought I'd ask this since the only topic on Destiny I've seen thus far have all been predicting what it's about, what type of game it is, etc. Since this last leak has given us a much better idea of what the game is, as well as the direction of the art and overall style, I figured we've all got some ideas about what the game will feel like.

However, as Bungie has already said something about how eventually Destiny will be more the gamers' than theirs (implying an amount of user involvement hopefully going beyond just user generated content like the maps made from Halo's Forge), I thought I'd ask this:

What do YOU, personally, want to see come out of Destiny?

I'd like to see a greater focus on exploration, and rewards for exploring--similar to games like the Elder Scrolls series, Assassins Creed 3, Far Cry (at least the third one, from what I hear), Fallout, etc.

A greater focus on immersion would be nice, as well. Despite being a first person game, I never felt truly connected to my Halo experience. Reach was the closest, primarily because I got to create my very own Noble Six, but I'd like to see immersion in the HUD, the UI, and maybe some RPG elements?

I actually want them to move away from this "faceless" hero stuff. This way, you can create a solid "canon" and "expanded universe" for discussion.

Look at Mass Effect, I really love the game, have beat each version several times, but what was canon, what wasn't? For some people, Tali or Miranda were their reason for being, for others it was Garrus.

I connected with Reach as well, not because we could "be" Noble Six, but because it finally felt like you were part of a team somewhat. You weren't a lone wolf on some strange planet with no allies. You were defending one of the most important worlds for humanity and watching it slowly fall and your allies die off.

I would love to see this "Last City" be sort of a Citadel type hub. That whole stuff with the different factions means sense now. Imagine picking one and being able to feel as you are part of that group.

As for exploration, yes, but not so it devolves into a collectible finding environment. Some people may like collecting 100 pigeons in Grand Theft Auto, not me. I just like to explore the world, learn more about it, take different paths.

Those different factions, I think of Harry Potter for some reason. Much like how Gryffindor kids are not allowed in Slytherin spaces, what if your UI/Hub was what faction you had chosen. And that as you progress, your stature inside grows.

For me, I don't need to have the character be an "avatar" of me to feel connected. I connect with an Ezio or Niko Bellic or Master Chief, more than a commander shepard I can customize any way.

Maybe something like Arma 2's campaign. A huge map, co-op capability, a lot of opportunities for exploration, more immersion, better AI. I'm just throwing things out here, Bungie can do whatever it likes with Destiny and I'll buy it cos I'm a fanboy.

I definitely agree that there should be some sort of 'hub.' And yeah, the exploration shouldn't be collecting things--I would want something more along the lines of personal rewards, whether that be some sort of item(s) or achievements that can be shown off in-game (e.g. titles or emblems).

As for the factions, I'd like to see something closer to what Guild Wars 2 did, I think. By that I mean, you could play cooperatively with friends who are in different factions, and visit those other factions' areas, but there would still be areas where open fighting (competitive multiplayer) would be going on (this assuming that it's going to have MMO-ish elements). Of course, this all depends on how the factions are in the final game.

And although I totally understand what you mean about the character, and I definitely don't want to be just any faceless hero standing alone, I'd like to be able to have deep customization options for my character. I like feeling like it's not just the story of the world I'm in, but like I'm forging my own path through that world as well.

Maybe something like Arma 2's campaign. A huge map, co-op capability, a lot of opportunities for exploration, more immersion, better AI. I'm just throwing things out here, Bungie can do whatever it likes with Destiny and I'll buy it cos I'm a fanboy.

Yeah, I think the A.I. is a huge part of making things more interesting and immersive than Halo. Reach's AI, although good for what Bungie wanted them to do, had started to feel stale after so many Halo games.

Then of course, definitely the exploration. I want there to be a galaxy like Mass Effect, but with way more planets to actually land on an explore on your own, without the game just showing you a text description.

I really just want to play something that I'm 100% certain they wanted to do. Something everyone was truly happy and in top form developing. I didn't hate Halo: Reach, and I know that a staggering amount of work went into it. I'm not, nor will I ever say or believe that they didn't care about the project. I only think that perhaps they had had enough of Halo, even if they hadn't completely realized it. It seemed like they wanted to do something different, but couldn't do that in a Halo game.

What I'd like to see as far as gameplay, given how little we know and how broad a range we have to speculate in, is something with a large focus on exploration. I think Bungie is capable of building a world that is inconceivably fun to explore. Given that the focus is supposedly social instead of competitive, what I'm hoping for is a very cooperative, wonder-filled experience. I have no doubt that guns will be blazing, things will be going boom, ect but atmosphere and playspace are what they excel at, and I want them to capitalize on that from the beginning.

I'm not really sure what I want or what I expect from the current leaks.

I would however appreciate if more details of the game don't leak out. It really ruins the hype and excitement for me. I can't imagine why people do it, well maybe if IGN is paying big bucks... Still annoys me.

  • 11.28.2012 2:14 AM PDT

No MMO. Online capability should be in, but it shouldn't be the focus of the game. Other than that, I'd be happy to let them do what they want with the game.

-MiDDY-

I want Bungie to give me whatever it is they feel like giving me. I've missed them dearly and I'm ready to give them whatever monies needed to get my hands on their next piece of awesomeness, (even if I have to get a 720 first)

But honestly, the whole FPSMMO thing kinda makes me excited if it is to be something of that nature. That's something that would really expand my horizon on a console. I'm interested in the concept and want to know more about it. Time cannot pass fast enough lol. I also want customization. ALL SORTS OF IT. Millions of things to tinker with, colors, ect... But honestly, I just want Bungie back :)

Can't wait for what the future holds for them, us, and Destiny. :D

  • 11.28.2012 2:48 AM PDT

I don't want it to suck. That's a first.

Because right now, it looks like a mashup of Halo, Star Wars (KotOR) and Mass Effect with little sprinkles of other major sci fi on top of it.
I should be excited for that as that is the combination of my 3 favorite sci fi universes....but so far I'm not impressed :(

The "its aimed at your inner 7 year old" has me particularly weary. Perhaps that is something that is misquoted, or formulated badly. Perhaps it means they try to capture that feeling Lucas touched upon with the first Star Wars movies.
If so: great.
But if this means a universe that really isn't brave enough to be mature: sadface.

I want a space opera, with as much depth, or moreso, than the Halo universe.

I don't know what to expect, i'm a ps3 only owner, so i have no idea what bungie is offering, but hopefully a cod like rpg :)

  • 11.28.2012 3:51 AM PDT

READ IT.

I won the Star. With this on Week 18.

SWORDS...

I think Bungie really does need to do more sword action, guns are okay, but swords, knives, axes... they are technologically advanced with like plasma (I guess like the Elite's Energy sword?), but only used as to make the metallic blades sharper and more powerful.

Per Audacia Ad Astra!

I want the Global battle we were supposed to have in Reach. I also want to be immerse in this world, i want great music, and of course a great story with characters well develloped, and improvement from Bungie in term of cinematic, because 343i maybe a newbie as a dev but they are far far away in this area.

  • 11.28.2012 4:38 AM PDT

Memento mori.

I guess one of the things we can all agree on is that we don't want it to sacrifice maturity in favor of appealing to a wider audience. That said, Halo wasn't exactly the most mature, gory, or violent FPS, for an FPS with an M rating. I doubt that there'll be a super noticeable change in that sort of thing in Destiny.

Apart from that, it seems like everyone has a slight issue with the idea of this being some form of an MMO--which I know I definitely have a slight issue with. However, as far as we know it's only coming out on Xbox and PS3, not PC. Which automatically is going to separate it from games like WoW, Guild Wars 2, KOTOR, etc. Also, if it's an FPS or 3rd person shooter, it's going to have to avoid things like leveling or stats (apart from things like Rank and K/D ratios, the usual suspects of competitive play), in order to stay fair between players.

I want a space opera, with as much depth, or moreso, than the Halo universe.

Also, this. An actual space opera type game would be awesome.

Glad you asked!

The greatest need is for a Tactical Withdrawl option in multiplayer. This would give the ability of teams losing by a mile to withdraw from the game by majority vote. The winning team gets bonus points for overwhelming the losing team and the losing team gets points without being penalised for quitting. the other advantage is that everyone gets to play more games. You never see the real military sending in troops and saying "we better leave them there to die or we'll get banned for ten minutes"

Also slayer can get a bit tedious. Why not add other secondary objectives such as points for finding objects or blowing stuff up other than players?

And instead of ranking up, how about ranking out? Everyone gets to a certain rank then you can become a specialist with a choice of three or more ranking routes.

Many gave their lives so that we could live on. I intend to honor them by remembering them. Remember Cyborg. Remember John. Remember Noble.

I would like more heroes like Chief - big visors, not much talking, able to do anything.

But ODST proved that even changing from one cool dude specialized in one thing to another cool dude was pretty cool too, though.

I like the concept art a lot - kinda reminds me of Marathon and a little bit of Septerra Core (I love the game).

I want Bungie to be Bungie and provide a solid game.

I do hope for a more assistance free experience, i.e. I'd rather see a rocket launcher require aiming rather than tracking.

Graphically, I think Bungie knows what they are doing, so I don't think they will over do it. i.e. Halo 4 has so much crap on the screen all the time.

I would LOVE a PC version, but not expecting that.

Vote for me for a free cookie.

Bungie has to stop with all these silent protagonists.

You and Me and the Devil makes three.

Rpg elements, dogfights like in starwars battlefront, deep character customization, space opera quality like mass effect 2

After reading the speculative info over at "Waiting for Destiny", my mind has flown off the handle, real deep and complex economical infrastructure, actual player-initiated expansion/creation of cities and general terrain, the different clans of knights, it all blows my mind to think that there is a real possibility that this can be pulled off.

I mean, Joe Staten did say "a game world that will eventually become more your world than ours".

That is one bold statement, a game where we control nearly every aspect not only our own character but we influence the world around us in ways only real life has replicated thus far.

I know I am walking on clouds here, but gentlemen(and ladies), believe me when I say, Bungie is about to reinvent the &%#*ing wheel.

A Bungie fan from the far cold north.

I want a game that's unique. I don't want anything like Mass Effect or Star Wars. But I think Bungie has got that covered.

I would like to see them going with a Hard sci-fi style, at least art-wise. The concept art looks a little bit like that. I also want a universe that has a rich backstory.

And last but not least, I want the gameplay to be as solid as it was in Halo. A no-nonsense experience that is easy to learn but hard to master. And that's not saying there can't be any character leveling or something like that.

That was my point. I'm all for customization and making the "character" your own. But enough with the faceless avatar. I want Bungie to develop a solid story with established canon as fact from the get-go. So we know who the characters are from the beginning.

Look at Mass Effect. What is canon and what isn't? If you say Shepard is a male as they originally intended, you make a lot of people who only played as a female shepard mad. If you romanced Ashley, Kaidan, Liara, Garrus, Miranda, Jack, Tali etc.

Why not give us someone who has a guaranteed name, gender, occupation, history etc. and then we just customize appearance or clothes or their "area" or whatever. If you want to play as a woman, this is who she is. You don't get to choose. There's no basis to say games, where the protagonist is "not you", aren't immersive enough. I play Assassin's Creed or Grand Theft Auto and maintain the same immersiveness as opposed to a Noble Six. I never once felt like I was Six. I kept thinking he was this tough liutenant who is a hyper lethal vector like Chief lol.

I certainly hope so! But if any studio could do it, it would definitely be Bungie. No matter what Destiny ends up looking like, whatever its rating may be, I have faith in Bungie.

As for the protagonist: @Madness87 I completely understand what you mean about the main character having their own identity. I love all those games. But at the same time, a game like Guild Wars 2 -- an MMO, where you can customize your character in detail -- created a great, linear story that felt personal to me. Even though it would change from player to player depending on the character each person made, the story still felt like on with a solidly grounded protagonist.

The difference between GW2 and Halo: Reach is that you could only customize Noble Six's armor and, even though he technically wasn't a silent protagonist, he still felt like one. He barely said anything. Your character in GW2 speaks a lot, and even though it's all going to be essentially the same, the character's background and choices near the beginning of the story, and the characters they meet, are primarily up to the player; yet the story wasn't any less strong for me.

I think something akin to that would be a good way for Bungie to create a solid canon, while still retaining the customization that so many gamers want nowadays (me included).
