Recon, what is this? So lost here.

Summary:

1: Destiny information leak occurs.
2: In online information related to the leak, a particular URL is mentioned as being Bungie/Destiny-related.
3: Lots of people (members of this site and non-members) attempt to browse that URL and log into that site.
4: I propose that the site is due an apology/explanation from us, the community.
5: It is later shown that the owner of that domain/site is not likely impacted or bothered by the extra hits or unexplained login attempts.
6: However, it is pointed out that many people probably used their WLID credentials to attempt to log into that site.
7: Those people should be made aware that if they did, they should take the precaution of changing their associated password ASAP.

and here we are now.

sorry, but what are WLID credentials and why should I change the password. Also why does Foman no longer feel sorry for this guy?

WLID is your Windows Live ID so I would consider changing it if you entered it in.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

I say we give his site/server a cigarette and a ride home. Only fair since we pounded it so hard.

Do we really have to give them a ride? Can't we just leave some cab fare on the dresser?

Hey I am a big Bungie fan ever since I played Halo 2. I love the series, I love Bungie. I have made a few Bungie logos in my metal shop.

So its not Bungie's? Hmmm that sucks.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

The owner has owned the domain since 1995 and internet archive photos show that over the years, several different businesses have used the site as their homepage. All evidence points to the domain being a "cybersquatter" who purchases domain names containing popular words for the sole purpose of selling or renting them out at a profit. Cybersquatting annoys me, as I do not think that it is a legitimate business, and therefore I no longer feel sorry for the site's owner.

Welcome to the jungle.

http://www.destiny.com/tos.html

The site's terms of service. Haven't read the whole thing, but from the website's heart icon and the first little bit of the tos, it looks like this thing is some kinda dating site. Definitely not Bungie related.

Either that, or Bungie is pulling another ilovebees with a site that appears to be completely unrelated at first glance. Damnit, I can't decide.

I'm beginning to lean more toward this being an ARG thing, because some of the sections of this ToS are mighty suspicious.

The world we live in is filled with cheats, frauds, poseurs, the false and insincere, with rapacious characters who seek to take unfair advantage of the guileless, naive, innocent and trusting. You might meet actual people through our services, but then again, you might not; you may never know for sure whether any encounter was with a real person. You may encounter profiles that are total fakes and you may receive communications from total fakes through our services. By "total fakes" we mean to include profiles that are total fiction, pure and simple, posted by people who bear no resemblance whatsoever to the identity described and we mean also to include communications generated by people who are deceiving you in every regard about their identity, description, and motives and communications from scripts and programs operated automatically to deceive and mislead, which may not actually not be transmitted by any real person at all. The real people you meet, if any, may be total imposters and may have malicious or pecuniary motives; they may even be paid to engage you. There simply is no way to keep these characters and programs out of any social networking site any more than there would be a way to keep them all out of society in general, and so it surely possible, and more, perhaps likely, that you will encounter them here. You may be amused by them, too. You are most strenuously advised to trust no one but your Mother, and certainly not to trust the rascals or programs you will meet here. In this Agreement, you release us from all liability stemming from any of this. This is more fully explained in Section I. of this Agreement, Cautions About The Use Of This Service And Your Release Of Liability.

In order to enhance your amusement experience, to stimulate you and others to use our Services more extensively, and to generally sprinkle some sparkle and excitement into the Services of DESTINY.COM, we may post fictitious profiles, generate or respond to communications by means of automated programs or scripts that simulate or attempt to simulate your intercommunication with another real human being (though none really exists and any dialog is generated by programming), and we may employ or contract for the paid services of real persons who may interact with you as part of their compensated employment. While these communications may seem genuine, authentic, and personal, they may be broadcast simultaneously to a large number of persons and possess none of these qualities. While their contents may appear to be true, they may be quite false; while their contents may appear to sincere, they may be quite disingenuous. Sometimes, we may use these techniques or others like them for other business purposes, too, including, but not limited to those cases in which we monitor and/or investigate into operations, including but not limited to allegations that you or others have violated this Agreement.

Either the legal department behind this site has a sense of humour, or there's more to this than what meets the eye.

just out of curiosity, how is it not a legitimate business. While I don't think anyone does it full time, as a side job it doesn't sound like a bad way to make some quick cash. What if I went and bought the domain FinalFantasy19 (we all know it is going to happen). Isn't that smart of me since I know that company will eventually have to buy the domain from me?

Quote from Confucius

By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
We as a community
Are sorry for you

I don't know maybe we should just post a sorry thread in the community forums and get people to sign their names by making a post

If all of your evidence points towards cybersquatting, then you should report it. If you are not familiar, the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (15 U.S.C. § 1125(d)) makes instances of cybersquatting illegal under U.S. law.

If it is as you say, that this is a clear case of cybersquatting against a registered Bungie Inc trademark, then you should report it. Otherwise, do not make such claims.

Tell him to hand over the domain name to Bungie...or else.

Or else, we... Make him a beautifully designed website named something extremely similar and give it to him with an email asking for the password to the original and apologizing for the inconvenience :)

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

Couldn't a PSA be delivered in the form of a temporary sticky-ed thread? It's something that you can do in the short term to notify people that it might be a good idea to change their passwords (and within your power to do immediately).

I tried to do a bit of searching for blogs (or the like) which would mention receiving heavy traffic over the last few days (and which were somehow "destiny" related) but I didn't find anything. Can you be entirely sure that an apology is warranted given most websites appreciate increased traffic?
