In Skyrim which faction did you choose, and why? I've beaten the main game and I'm trying to decide what to choose. Are there any gameplay elements connected to either faction or is it just your name branded into their ranks? What changes if you choose a faction?

Neither, I murdered all of them equally

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

Imperials for sure!

I did both. After you beat the civil war quests all it changes is who you get some quests from. Nothing really too different between the two quest lines they both use the same locations etc.

I've never made that choice, because I never found the civil war compelling enough to choose a side. They both kind of suck, and they both do a terrible job of making you want to side with one or the other. It's much easier to treat both sides as free EXP and gold and murder them as you find them in the wild, much like the majority of Skyrim's residents.

Life?
I have the internet and Doctor Who; i don't need a life.

If you pick Stormcloaks you can't buy the house in Whiterun after you storm the city.
The steward disappears completely (or he did for me anyway)

I did both.

So you can choose both or was that in two separate games? Also what changes if you choose one? Is there a point to choosing? What happens?

Imperials, The stormcloaks are just thalmor puppets who think they're making skyrim stronger when they're actually making it weaker.

Story-wise is all fun and good but is there a gameplay difference?

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

I hunted down and destroyed the camps of both and then decimated their main cities of Solitude and Windhelm.

Life is a journey, if you spend all of it with your nose in your map, you may miss some of the best parts.

I killed both of them.

Circle Jerkin' I got my wiener workin'

That feel when I still haven't chosen a side because I am indecisive.
