Why are you guys surprised the US isn't on that list?

Is US education really as bad as everyone says?

Unsurprising. I was friends with a Finnish foreign exchange student last year; she was pretty smart.

Yes. Worse, even.

Do any of the results surprise you?

Nope. Finland's relatively recent but immensely successful education reformation should be emulated by any country not on that list.

New Zealand's in that list!:D

KOTOR

We have abhorrent public education compared to other developed countries, but our centers of higher education are among the best of the best, especially the University of California system universities (for a bunch of public universities).

My God. America isn't anywhere on this list. The appropriate title for this list is "Countries with the Best Education, After America."

Post of mine pretty much describing the terrible US GPA, honors, AP, etc. system.

Now of course, take into consideration where are the best universities are.

In the United States. Highly intelligent people immigrate to the USA for higher education and stay there for the job market. So the smarties end up in the USA anyway.

Michio Kaku seems to disagree.

What house has a rocket pod, has legs, and has a long narrow barrel that probably shoots something powerful?

Sounds like you're describing the lower half of my body, actually.

This.

How many idiots I have come across living here is unbelievable. I was basically the second teacher at my school because I had to teach about everyone in class after the teacher was done teaching. I must say though, it is exciting seeing someone getting smarter from me teaching them. Makes me feel useful.

I'd like to see a list of post-secondary education by country, and see how well Finland et al do then.

Singapore, what? I thought they were a 3rd world country? What decade have I been living in!

The capital of singapore is the cleanest city on earth and is more advanced than Times Square.

My Maths teacher is from Singapore. Also they have a good games industry apparently.

Also they really should have broken the UK down into it's separate nations, they all have separate education systems.

I expected us to be there, to be honest.

Definitely didn't expect 'MURRICA though.

Join the Halo Haven group!

Lots of people in this thread commenting on the US not being on the list....

...Woooo UK! Go us, we're 6th, see mum, size doesn't matter.

No but seriously, the top 5 we're pretty damn predictable, except I thought it was Switzerland not Finland who were top but that doesn't matter, the fact that the UK is 6th did surprise me, our culture is not particularly education-oriented, and the whole system was heading into dis-repair in recent years. I personally think that report is slightly dated, or at least the results in it are, as I don't think we're quite 6th any more, certainly still top 10, but 6th...eh I dunno, I can't seem to believe it really.

Quality of education, not graduation rate. I should've been more specific. I have no idea how to quantify something like that, but it was done for public education so there must be a way.

Never thought Finland would be at first but from 2 to 5 doesn't surprise me. It is nice to see countries in 6 - 10 there somewhere.

No offence but it is not surprising that America is not up in top 10.
