-bow chicka brown cow-

Well, I already knew Canada was up there, as my esteemed and highly egotistical Canadian friends always point out to me when we have a disscussion about how much my country sucks. :(

I'm a little surprised Finland tops it off. I'm not even remotely surprised USA isn't on there. Our public education system is an absolute joke.

Oh, -blam!-. Maybe it's all that pressure to get dem grades or something.

The top five countries are also the most depressed. Funny how that works.

This is something I think also.

Interesting how Indonesia ranks at the very bottom, but Singapore ranks #4

Not really.

One of the problems with the USA's system is they think they need to increase the difficulty of the curriculum in order to get better. However, since we have teachers unions and can't fire bad teachers, kids just aren't going to learn this harder material. We need better teachers more than we need harder curriculum.

Same applies to college in way. Professors have unions, so you can't touch them.

This isn't of course the only problem, or maybe even the biggest.

edit: However, look at the countries on this list. The ones on the top aren't doing jack -blam!- in this world to really help make it better place. They're all pretty much neutral countries that keep to themselves. (exception being China, Japan, and the UK)

America's not even there?

Cmon, we're not that bad...

False. We're awful.

True, I dont think we even crack the top 20, but I could be mistaken.

I'm not discriminatory. I don't like any of you.

We came in sixth? I'm surprised. I also expected China to be number one.

US: #2 in spending per student @ over $11,000 per student. Test terrible compared to international peers.

Finland: Well off the list @ $8,000 per student. Over 30% less than 'Murica. Tests #1.

US politician's solution to education: Dump more money into the fire.

It gets better

I'm actually surprised Germany wasn't on that list

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...

America needs to get its crap together. Its so sad not seeing us even in the top 10...
This.
I remember seeing old charts of these showing the U.S being way up there.

Don't feel bad. As I discussed, Canada is bad and should feel bad. I am in the Canadian education system as an intern at a school. The education here is a joke. We are 15 years behind.

Not surprised in the slightest way.

And yet, the US still ranks best for tertiary education.
Overall, we have the best education in the world. What we lacked in highschool , we make up for with college.
Yet not everybody can go to college, so whats the point?

The point is the US needs to learn from the Europeans, and the Europeans need to (as reluctant as they may be) take a page out of the US' playbook.

US politician's solution to education: Dump more money into the fire.
Aren't they quite literally doing that by investing more in the military?

RIP Logan ~B.B.

I'm a tad surprised to the US in 17th. We've been placing ~30th in similar studies for 8th and 12th graders.

We should know better, because we are better.

Only 10th place? We need to be better.

Yes this surprises me. What are those countries doing with their advances in education? Because it seems to me America has all the advanced stuff over here.

  • 11.29.2012 8:59 AM PDT

I will admit, Finland came a bit out of left field here. Finland seems content to be kind of a small country that doesn't really destroy anyone or pick fights with anyone, so hardly anyone really looks at it thanks to our media. However, eh, not really surprised all that much on the results. Thought Canada'd be a bit higher, though.

American education is based off of old Prussian education, and is more intended to produce obedient factory workers than geniuses. In fact, the educational system is designed to stifle creativity and innovation in favor of indoctrination.

Small Community, Lots of Fun. We do Halo, Minecraft, and much more.

You can tell how far behind we(US) are by looking at the language courses. I didn't start learning a second language until 8th grade. My German exchange student started learning his second, in elementary school, and his third later on. Three! And most people here don't even know 2.

"If you want to test a man's character, give him power" -- Abraham Lincoln

And yet people in the U.S. still want to keep spending more money on a terrible education system with invasive teacher unions that are self serving.

End the Evacuation department at the federal level and end teachers unions, give the students and parents choices. Problem solved.

Do any of the results surprise you?

No, but what does surprise me is that Sweden didn't make the top ten. They're usually pretty good at stuff like this.
