I came into this thread thinking Sweden. Finland is totally what I meant.
Not really surprising, since Northern Europe is arguably the best place in the world to live.

I'm curious, have you been there?

You can tell how far behind we(US) are by looking at the language courses. I didn't start learning a second language until 8th grade. My German exchange student started learning his second, in elementary school, and his third later on. Three! And most people here don't even know 2.

Easy answer. Americans don't need it. The other English speaking nations don't really need it either, and this is coming from an exchange student.

Oh, -blam!-. Maybe it's all that pressure to get dem grades or something.

The top five countries are also the most depressed. Funny how that works.

This is something I think also.

Actually the pressure to get good grades is relatively low in Finland, it's no Korea for sure. And It's not like we all get straight A's, the distribution of grades is pretty similar to everyone's.

I'm actually surprised Germany wasn't on that list

Why? I go to German school and one of the problem's is the student's don't really care enough sometimes. We're great at cognitive thinking but usually we just live from klausur to klausur... The system is different. It's hard, harder than America's, but does that make it any better?

America needs to get its crap together. Its so sad not seeing us even in the top 10...

And yet people in the U.S. still want to keep spending more money on a terrible education system with invasive teacher unions that are self serving.

End the Evacuation department at the federal level and end teachers unions, give the students and parents choices. Problem solved.

This is one of the few situations where money really is the answer...just now how we think.

What needs to be done in the US is an investment in restructuring the public school system in order to make if more efficient and more effective.

Finland is surprising, the rest not so much. I kinda expected the UK to be around 6th.

Finland is one of the happiest based on many different "world happiness" lists from multiple sources.

But we also have one of the highest suicide rates..

One does not simply understand the Finnish mindset...

Trust me, I happen to have one.

We have been spending more money on education for decades and our education has gotten worse ever since we institutionalized public schools and brought about the education department.

We need neither.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

I think the point is that an A grade in Finland is worth more than an A grade from somewhere else

To be fair those in native english speaking countries rarely bother to learn another language because everybody else is learning English.

Our language's dominance is also our weakness.

True, but the funny thing is that I've seen Americans that produce worse English output than teens in Finland (doesn't apply to all of them of course )

Are you -blam!- kidding me...

Of course it isn't absolute free and given by friendly aliens...

The point was that the education doesn't cost anything to the student! (except if you're over 18 and pay taxes)

Actually we get social benefits (monthly money) from the government to support our living while attending to our free education.

And just checked the tax rates. USA and Finland seem to have rather similar tax rates.

look it up

"There's a very fine line between not listening, and not caring. I'd like to think that I walk that line every day."

At first I wondered what's being implied with "in terms of cognitive skills" and "educational attainment," but I read the article and I think it's a very article.

No, I'm not surprised at all.

yeah, but finland is stupid. It hasnt even started any major wars. So why should we care if its not even a cool guy?

"There's a very fine line between not listening, and not caring. I'd like to think that I walk that line every day."

The study notes that while funding is an important factor in strong education systems, cultures supportive of learning is even more critical -- as evidenced by the highly ranked Asian countries, where education is highly valued and parents have grand expectation. While Finland and South Korea differ greatly in methods of teaching and learning, they hold the top spots because of a shared social belief in the importance of education and its "underlying moral purpose."Something that no amount of funding will -- fundamentally -- ever change.
