Don't worry the US will be number one soon!
/s
One series of campuses doesn't make the entire education system. If it makes you feel better we already have schools that do this here :).

I was being sarcastic hence the end sarcasm tag (/s). I'm against iPads in classrooms. The US has been trying to integrate crap like that for the last twenty five years and we still lag behind the rest of the world.
Well, there's a right way and a wrong way to integrate technology into the classroom. In most cases, it's done very wrong. Especially using iPads instead of a cheaper alternative.

Student:teacher ratios, teacher pay [especially for special ed teachers], building maintenance, etc. The entire public school model needs reform. Tossing iPads into an already broken classroom wont fix anything.

Teacher pay is fine the way it is. Special ed teachers shouldn't be payed more than regular teachers for obvious reasons. The other things you've addressed are justified. Except iPads will definitely change the learning experience and make kids more engaged, which is pretty obvious.
That single post made it clear you have no idea about what you're talking about. I'd advise you to not post in this thread anymore.

Well, as I mentioned earlier, teachers unions do little to inflate teacher salaries. I teach in CA, where teachers unions dictate nearly everything, and our salaries aren't much more than other states. It's more about making it difficult to fire teachers, rather than getting them more money.

You don't teach. It's blatantly obvious that you're not a teacher, which is pretty pathetic to lie to support you case. You're in a forum at 11:40, which is enough to deduce you're not in a teaching position. You want money, and that's basically your entire argument which doesn't even revolve around the students.
Well, it's 9:40am here, and I don't have a 1st period class to teach, so I'm not quite sure what to tell you.

Just because it's low doesn't mean it's bad. There's a reason why certain jobs aren't well paid, which is why you should learn basic economics.
That's because of a philosophical difference between us. I, along with many other people, think teachers are one of the most important professions. Other people don't value them. I would wager you fall into the latter category.

Yes, wages should be commensurate to the job, which is why teachers' salaries are poor. Teachers provide a pivotal role which is also not easy, and the wages do not reflect that.

Do any of the results surprise you?

Not at all.

Life is like a clogged toilet. It's full of crap until you do something about it.

I don't speak Karate!

Doesn't surprise me. All of the Socialist countries in Europe will have exceptional, but terribly conformist educations. The whole "no child left behind" thing in America basically places us lower because we teach to the lowest students, not the highest.
The US's placement actually is higher than I thought. Must be all the private high schools, picking up the slack.

I'm glad that I go to a private high. After scoring in the top 1% in the nation during standardized tests, and getting a perfect score on my pre-act, a public education where I live would probably lower my IQ by 100 points.

I'm pleasantly surprised the US made it up that far. We haven't been doing too hot lately.

Lol at everyone saying how bad America is. Still the no contest best country.

  • 11.30.2012 4:04 PM PDT

"OMG US IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD"
Meanwhile France, Sweden, Norway, ect are even ranked lower.

Dang those French, Norweagian, and Swedish are backwards hicks. LOL

Notice how none of those countries throw their money into the military. (unlike a certain other country)
