Yes, this is another point where I think Bungie dropped the ball. There's no way they could have evacuated an entire metropolis in the time it took the Prophet Regret to break through the defense line. It would take hours to empty a city, not mere minutes.

Advent Rising had fleeing civilians, civilians being slaughtered and it was very effective at evoking an emotional response. I found myself angered, and strangely driven to deliver some payback.

In contrast, Halo 2 was more laid back. All you had to do was get from point A to Point B in Mombasa. That sense of urgency, that emotional turmoil, wasn't there.

Maybe it was just a very unocupied city to begin with, then it wouldn't have taken too long to evacuate.

Eh.. I don't think I would like that very much.

Everyone in New Mombasa and the surrounding area for miles was wiped out by the slipspace rupture, anyway.

The only problem with that, is that Advent Rising was a pile of crap.

I agree totally. The magical lack of civvies totally violated SOD (Suspension of Disbelief) for me. It yanked me out of the story and really reminded me that it was just a game.

It could add in some interesting tactical puzzles too, especially if civvies are getting in your way while fighting and you are trying not to kill them.

I can just see the media now latching onto the image of Civilians being killed by the covenent. Some poloticians will have a feild day!
Anyways i dont think a city that big could be evacuated that fast.

civilians evacuated and hid somewhere deep in the earth. who in their right minds would still be out in the street?

They evacuated the city. After all, that was the only place the Covenant decided to land.

Also, civilians would have made the game sucktacular.

rumour has it the last level of halo2 was going to be the cheif in a high populated area, commandeering a civ hog and using it to run away from something, much like the end to halo.

its probably complete bollocks, bt maybe we'll see something like in in h3.

this is a retarded idea. there should be no civillians at all. not only were they all evacuated, but think bout what you're saying. are there civillians walking around the streets over in the middle east in the heat of battle? no . they hide. and would it be a smart idea to hide in a battlefield? i don't think so

Did you see the size of the city? It must have been pretty occupied.

Well the civilians probably think MC is like an evil cyborg bent on world destruction. Still, the humans could of made a militia to help the marines

Also, what happened to all the other countries??
Even though they are a world defence force the Marines are made up entirely of Americans, Australians and Mexicans.
What about Asia, Britain, Europe or Africa??

This really pissed me off as well. The UN marines basically are the US army right click save as. There isn't even a pretense at internationalism. The occasional hispanic in the ranks probably is due to the fact that hispanic Americans make up a larger proportion of the US military, and there is a token Australian.

We also have Seargent Shaft as the token black caricature, and he really only functions as comic relief.

I would chalk this up to Bungie being a bunch of suburban nerd white guys, but it doesn't get much whitee-er than Willhaven and CliffyB, and (human) minorities feature prominently in the Unrealverse. Heck, the default character in UT2004 multiplayer is a black guy (Jacob), the "flagship" character for Unreal is another (Malcom), and the three main characters in Unreal Championship II (Anubis, Sobek and Selket) are Arabs.

I don't even want to touch on the whole "East African Protectorate" issue, as historically "Protectorate" means the same thing as "Colony".

Is this as bad as all out Ringo-ism? No, but it's definetly leaning in that direction.

Have you played Marathon?

The civilians suck!

I am like: "Get the F*** out of my way, I am trying to get on the lift you are standing infront of." They move infront of doors blocking you for ages.
