Don't judge a book by its cover, unless it has bacon on the cover, then it is a good book.

So in a not so recent development it turns out that Destiny.com, which is password protected is owned by what some people would call a cybersquatter, or someone who buys a domain name that is popular so he can rent it out to people.

Some people find this annoying or even just plain wrong in some cases. But is it? If I register the domain FinalFantasy 19 in anticipation that there will be a Final Fantasy 19, is this a wrong thing of me to do. I'm sure that everyone here is open to making a quick dollar, but is this a way to earn extra cash?

I'm not so good with advice...Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

Time to register black ops 3-6 and Modern warfare 5-137.

ME2 was known for stupidity and being retarded

*points at the guy who purchased the MW3 domains' "success" story*

Recon Number 54 -
If they are still looking, then while holding the snarl, I let drool start to drip from my mouth, I stand, curl my fingers into claws and with a hunched over crouch, I then make slow and deliberate steps towards them. When I get close enough, I let them hear my agonized and gasping growls and then, if they continue to stare, when I get within arm's reach? I kiss them on the nose, and run away giggling.

It is an unreliable and low profit business strategy.

Based on the chance/assumption of a game being made in the future and that the dev will actually buy the site from you.

You will have to rent/buy the site until then and that could get to the point of wiping out any potential profits.

You know how much money the guy who did this to the Dallas Cowboys made? A lot! He made his nut of of it.

Also it's like a buck a month to register a name lol

I've got a fan!

Business strategy? No way.

An unreliable form of investment that may pay off somewhat lucratively? Yep.

I'm sure there are people who have profited from it, but the chances of anyone actually doing it is very slim.

(Reliability :P)

Not really. Everything is involved online now. Buy a Pepsi they have codes you have to go online for. Buy a game, go online to register this and that. It's endless and only gonna become more and more of everyday products then it already has.

Can't they just override you or something and get it for free? Hell they could sue you in the process if they wanted to.

Once you trademark a name it does that for the whole series doesn't it? Like if Halo was trademarked then anything Halo in it Microsoft owns and if someone else wants to use it they would have to pay MS?

No. You can't trademark the word Halo it's public domain. They could sue if sony made a game called Halo but it would have to be similar. If bungie for example stops paying their domanin register fees and I made Bungie.net and kept paying for it then I would own the name.

I would just have to change the site to be unrelated to the company.
