You honestly think that's the reasoning behind the fatties request to take the seat?

No. He wants the seat because he's lazy and thinks people owe him something because he can't stop eating.

What are you basing this certainty that he is lazy and feel he is owed something on? Have you some proof, or is it a blind hatred of obese people?

Well he's fat.

So he's obviously too lazy to do anything about it.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

I think that (I can be thick sometimes, but eventually I can come around) I've stumbled upon the core issue/challenge here that we're all dancing around.

ITT: Differing definitions of "Want" -vs- "Need" and the personal importance/priority we each place onto either term.

Gravity weakens the body, and the body atrophies naturally over time, it's been proven. Gravity doesn't make you fat. Lack of exercise and a healthy lifestyle makes you fat. I will not pity someone who doesn't take care of their body.

No one gives a flying -blam!- about your pity. How you feel is irrelevant entirely.

It's that at the time, one person needs the seat more than the other person.

One of the leading causes of paralysis in children is diving into shallow water. If, for example, you overheard a guy in a wheelchair had done exactly that, would you refuse to give him your seat because he "didn't use good judgement"? What about someone who was paralyzed because he was riding a bike without a helmet? A veteran disabled by an IED? Well, he should have been a bit faster, now shouldn't he have?

Like I said, are we going to just assume the worst about everyone and then act accordingly? Why are we singling out one group here?

For the the men in wheelchair, or the soldier, of course I would. Those are completely different circumstances. The former is an unfortunate accident, and accidents do happen. The latter happens in war time, and didn't happen due to an unhealthy lifestyle. These are completely different factors and scenarios, and are irrelevant.

It's all irrelevant. What you assume about someone's life choices based on their appearance is irrelevant. But I think the logic in this thread is completely faulty, even the logic that has nothing to do with the "here and now" nature of this situation.

Why is a person who was in an accident less deserving than a person who, for example, has a medical condition that requires him to take steroids (which cause weight gain) and make exercise dangerous, maybe a lung condition?

That is so unlikely.

It just is.

Not many, if any medicines make people obese. On the off chance they do exist, it obviously accounts for very little of the fat population.

That's just common sense.

OP did, and was escorted off of the bus by the driver.

The signs that say "the seats are for those with the greater need, please be aware of those around you" aren't just backfill in advertising space.

Your common sense is stupid as -blam!-.

Lots of medicines cause weight gain. It's a common side effect.

Weight gain doesn't mean turns normal people into land whales.

You were both at fault...

He shouldn't have assumed you would give your seat up. He should've asked politely instead
On the other hand it is much easier for you to stand than it is for him. You have to try to see it from his point of view

There is a certain point of tolerance that should never be reached.

This thread is why the Flood is no longer interesting. There are way too many people who are selfish, confrontational, ignorant, self absorbed, products of a society that only worships three things: Sex, Aggression, and the all-mighty Dollar Bill.

In 20 years from now, there will be a lot of people with depression issues because they spent their entire lives trying to obtain things they don't really want, and never developed a sense of appreciation.

During the pursuit of these goals, most of which won't serve your sense of worth no matter how hard you try, you will never find happiness, and thus, can only define your success comparatively. As such, you develop a self esteem issue, and attempt to fix your issue by calling out your perceived faults on other people.

"That guy is overweight, and I must stand my ground against this threat by not offering my seat."

"This person is an idiot, and I must argue with them to tell them they are an idiot."

"This lady is too promiscuous to associate myself with, even though I myself am very active with multiple partners, It is wrong for her to do it, for society tells me."

"This person's opinion about video games is wrong because he isn't as good of a player as I am."

All are example of logical fallacies that are often brought on by people who are not adjusted to society...

And that's really what this topic in general is about. People who think that society is a place where "weak" people work -blam!- jobs so the "strong" people can have a sports car, three houses, and all the other lavish things they so rightly deserve.

In reality, society is a way for all to thrive, and for many different careers, recreations, and creeds can coexist in a system that is beneficial to all.

ITT: The Flood demonstrates how extrinsic forces have more weight on them then intrinsic forces, and how they compete to measure up to standards they don't personally believe in, but are too afraid to challenge.

Perhaps, perhaps not. As long as they are conversing, the motivation of some participants is not really that relevant.

  • 11.29.2012 12:28 PM PDT

My courtesy when it comes to this extends to the disabled, the elderly, and pregnant women. That's it. These people usually can't improve their situation (aside from the pregnant woman of course. She most likely chose to become pregnant and pregnancy is a good thing because of the end result). In most cases, the obese DO have the ability to improve their situation by changing dietary habits, as well as through exercising to return back to a healthy self. Because of this, I say the OP is in the right here. That man had no right or privilege to demand that the OP relinquish the seat he was sitting on. And he had no just reason to ask that and to complain to the bus driver to kick him off. It's not a common courtesy to demand that someone give up their seat when you have no stronger right or privilege or need to sit than he does.

Great job. Now only did this statement completely invalidate my opinion, it makes your argument that much stronger.

You really knocked my ass on the ground with that rebuttal!

And Funk, I ain't mad. I'm not even sad. I'm "Meh". I'm bored. I have nothing better to do than argue with people who's idea of an actual response to a well thought opinion is "Oh yeah!? WELL YOU ARE OVERWEIGHT, AND SOMETIMES YOU DRINK ALCOHOL!"

That's how bored I am.
