Reconz be lay'n down the law!

It's not law, it's called common courtesy and used to be far more common and far more likely than even the law to guide people on how to act in public.

How and why is that so hard for anyone to do in their head? Why wouldn't you? Is the idea of "I got it first" and some sort of rudimentary chimp territorialism that strong in your blood that you can't understand the seats are there for the people who need them more than someone else?

But Recon, we have to make sure that people know better than to be fat in public! They're not allowed to tell racial minorities to stand to promote their inflated sense of self righteousness anymore. Who are they supposed to feel better than now?

What, are they just supposed to give a guy a seat because he needs it or something?

Women, the elderly, and the disabled should have that courtesy extended to them.

People who can't find their way onto a treadmill, or put down the fork don't deserve special treatment.

Nobody said you can't be fat. It's absurd to expect special treatment because of it though.

What if a skinny guy like me got on the bus and demanded you move because I'm lazy. Would you? Because it's essentially the same thing.

Because giving up your seat would not have caused you any real discomfort and he obviously needed to sit down more than you did.

Just because someone's a fat -blam!- doesn't mean you shouldn't show them the same courtesies you'd show others.

If you were my son, I'd be proud.
This. I'd take you out for a dinner at your favorite restaurant.

Quoted by a Mod. Call me a suck up, but I feel pretty damn awesome right now.

I get it if it's an old person or a pregnant person as well. The former has been around for a long time, and because of that, have more of a legitimate reason for weaker bones, shortness of breath, and weak muscles. In the case of the latter, they're carrying a new born child; housing life. Plus, I'd rather them sit down so the baby doesn't just slip out (happened to my english teachers mother; her mom went into labor and didn't want to be tied down, so she paced in her room, and the baby started sliding right out).

Now if it's a rude fat person, or a rude-ass teen, or something, then no, I would not give up my seat. I had a long day at the beach, swimming and being with friends. I'm tired and want to take a seat. If I got there first, I got there first. Sorry, but if the fat guy had such a problem, he could've waited for another bus or something to come along, or called a taxi. I see no sense of responsibility, or being noble, towards other humans who are rude, and this guy sounded extremely rude. If they're nice and polite, yes, that'll work more in their favor, and I'd probably give up my seat then if their need was greater.

tl;dr; Treat me nicely, sure, I might consider it. Be a rude twat, and you can expect no sympathy from me and you can suffer.

You did what I would have done. And if I got kicked out, I would have unleashed a fury of insults that would have made that fat man crawl into a hole.

I don't have much respect for morbidly obese people. What really irks me is the sense of entitlement these people think they have. Being fat is a choice. Don't expect special privileges when you essentially destroy your own body. Genes don't make you fat. You may have a predisposition to becoming fat, but then you just have to work a little harder to stay healthy.
What sense of unfair entitlement is there in this case? Pretty much every bus service I know has disability seating at the front of the bus, and they all have a policy where if you are asked to move to a different seat by the bus driver that you should comply or get the hell off his bus. The dude is just taking advantage of the policy that is already in place and that he is completely entitled to, forgive him if his very existance rustles your jimmies.

If anything you're the one who is feeling entitled to sit in the first seat your plopped your ass down in. As I said earlier in this thread, if you don't want to deal with having to give up your seat to fat people or otherwise, then don't sit in the disability section.

First of all, I wouldn't sit in the disability section to the begin with. They're there for people with disabilities. If I were to mistakenly end up in the disability section, I would give up my seat to someone that has a disability.

Second, being fat is not a disability. If being fat was a disability, that more than half of all Americans would qualify. If I were asked by a fat person to relieve my seat so they can sit down, I wouldn't have it. At that point, I wouldn't care if I was thrown off the bus.

What if the disabled person is disabled because of something that was his fault? We have to make sure that we're teaching him a lesson, right? And is it really necessary to give up your seat to an elderly person? They really should keep their bones stronger by standing.

If we're going to decide who deserves "special treatment" based on our shallow assumptions, why not do it for everyone?

Why do old people deserve special treatment? If it pains them to stand up or walk a little farther to a seat in the back of the bus, then perhaps they should be in a nursing home instead of using public transport.

...Nah, much easier just to extend that common courtesy to everyone.

The difference with a disabled person is I would have to assume it might be their fault they're disabled. With a fatty, it's a 100% certainty.

  • 11.29.2012 9:27 AM PDT

I'm with Recon on this. The dude was fat. Maybe it's genetics or maybe he loves his burges. Nonetheless the dude is going to knock over standing up so keep that in mind.

If someone can't function normally, then they are disabled. How they got there is entirely irrelevant.

Handicap seating is a matter of functionality, not respect or anything else. It is not there to make you feel good about yourself, It is there to make the transportation easier for everyone to use. Whether you like it or not doesn't matter.

In short, we care about your feelings exactly as much as you care about the feelings of others. Which is not at all.

How they got there is entirely relevant.

Why should I give up my seat for your bad lifestyle choices? The guy the OP described was clearly rude. If anyone came up to me and asked nicely if they could have my seat due to some sort of trouble standing, than I would gladly give it to them. But when you demand my seat rudely, you can keep standing, I don't mind.

I can't tell you how many times I got "what are you doing?" looks at questions when I offer my seat on a commuter train.

One man said "I think that you're older than me." I don't think that he was. I just said, "You just got on, I'm getting off in a few and I used to surf, my ankles and knees can take the swaying." and we smiled.

If offer the seat because I think that someone might need it more than me. In a way, I am assuming superiority over them and perhaps even overestimating their helplessness. But it gets them off of their feet, I feel better, and that is that.

Women, especially if they have kids and are trying to keep them together/safe, older folks, people with shopping bags, someone who is having trouble walking or standing, it's their need that justifies me standing, not whether or not I think that they "deserve their condition".

Because clinical depression is a mental illness that is widely misinterpreted and that the reaction from a normal (jerk) person would be "man up you whiny little -blam!-".

Obesity and clinical depression are similar in that regard.

Gravity weakens the body, and the body atrophies naturally over time, it's been proven. Gravity doesn't make you fat. Lack of exercise and a healthy lifestyle makes you fat. I will not pity someone who doesn't take care of their body.

disability is not the point for me. I don't have time or the ability to judge their life decisions. Who the hell thinks that they are empowered to be so high and mighty?

Who needs the seat more?

That person should get it and the person who stands should be an adult and not feel like a victim themselves.

"I am entitled to this more than that other person because the other person made bad choices?" Over a bus seat? OMG, people are seriously this damaged and petty?
