So, of the morbidly obese (meaning those with a BMI of over 45), how many do you think are that obese because of a medical condition?

By a medical condition, I mean something other than psychological. I mean a pituitary gland disorder, or hypothyroidism or something else that plays with your metabolism. Compulsive overeating does not count.

Hi I'm RT and I like to argue!

So between this and your other thread I'm going to conclude that you're a morbidly obese person with a medical cause (perhaps a pituitary disorder) who is going in for surgery soon to either deal with said underlying condition, or to get your stomach stapled.

How right am I? :-P

Not at all. This is a repeat of the last surgery, since it didn't work the last time.

No, this is in response to the bus thread.

I don't even buy into thyroid problems being legitimate.

I have Hashimoto's Disease - which is basically hypothyroidism where my body also attacks my thyroid gland, eventually killing it. I'll have to take medication for my entire life.

One of the symptoms, obviously, is weight gain. I've never had the weight gain problems, never have. Because of the lifestyle I live, that aspect of the disease has never appeared. My active lifestyle outweighs any changes in body hormones or metabolism that the disease may give.

tl;dr: Even medical diseases which prelude you to weight gain are not set in stone.

If you're asking what percent of obese people have a contributing medical condition and you leave out a whole class of medical conditions, you can't get an accurate result.

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

If you go on a knee jerk reaction every time someone posts something you find vaguely offensive you miss when points are made.

OP is asking what percentage of obese have obesity problems because of diseases that affect metabolism/water retention/etc., rather than diseases that affect the mind and cause to overeat.

One set of problems causes body imbalances in hormones and metabolism, the other has no body imbalance. Seems like valid separation to me.

Yes. But I am asking what causes it.

The only 'medical condition' I see in the Obese is Gluttony. Also, many people now a days are caught in a viscious eating cycle due to their parents choices, the accessibility of unhealthy 'good tasting' foods, and lack of exercise.

So, do I think Obesity is 'inherited' or people can't 'help' it? No. The above reasons are my stance on the matter. Work out regularly, eat right, and get good sleep as well as have a healthy amount of stress, and we wouldn't have this problem.
