Continental no longer exists, looks like United Airlines will have to settle the compensation.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

FOD is important, but the sheer size and traffic on most commercial airport runways make it difficult, costly, and in most cases doesn't turn up much for the time and effort involved.

It is one of the most critical, and literally an "all hands on deck" when FOD patrol is done on an aircraft carrier. For them, they are looking for things the size of seeds. Imagine trying that on an open to air, open to landscape airfield. Not easy, and while it is done more often than most of realize, objects are left on runways between inspections.

The shadow on the wall.

Silent

How the hell did no body notice that the plane had very literally burst into flames...

...

I don't even know what to say other than that. In reality, I doubt anybody was to blame.

Plane crashes are few and far between, and when they do happen it is generaly an accident (inb4til9-11wasanaccident).

Im really not surprised stuff is left on the runway's after all the runway cannot be 100% perfectly clear its quite literally impossible.

And that is why the court (this time) rightly understood and determined that no airline is so wanton, callous or insane as to willingly or knowingly leave debris on an runway that they also use for their own aircraft and passengers.

The loss of that Concorde was a tragedy, and in some cases, it is even possible to investigate to the point where "we can say if this one particular tiny event didn't occur, nothing else bad would have happened". Even though we can do that, it doesn't always indicate that the person or parties associated with that event "caused the tragedy" or "are responsible".

We're all born with a very human and very instinctive need for symmetry and balance. We expect and see it all around us, so when a tragedy happens, we look for, expect and sometimes instinctively demand that there be "something that balances out this loss". Life doesn't always give us satisfactory results in those instances.
