Subject: Being Fat.....Genetic or Choice?

My god carries a hammer. Your god died nailed to a tree. Any questions?

I try to avoid fat people, they're ugly and a nuisance.

Almost exclusively choice with a few genetics involved. Someone may have a condition such as Brittle Bone disease preventing them from excercise. As a result they'd get fat. However they weren't genetically fat, the fatness came from another factor which was the inherent disease.

My work friend has thyroid problems but also eats healthy and she runs. She's not overweight because she made the choice to keep her weight under control. She's educated and makes smart choices. There are a few people who have legitimate excuses, but a majority of people do not and it's very preventable.

Don't punch a British kid, the queen'll come after you.

Some people may be more disposed to gaining weight but they can still work to get rid of it.

Choice. You may be predisposed to many things, but YOU decide to take the action.

The biggest effect genes can have on something like that is by making a person more likely to hold onto weight due to a slow metabolic rate.

Still fat doesn't just grow out of nowhere. To actually get fat, you need to eat more than what you use. The only variation between people is how many calories they use on adverage.

The closest thing to a 'fat' disease is Hypothyroidism, where a lack of thyroid hormone causes a very slow metabolic rate. The key thing though is that it doesn't cause people to be fat, it makes it so they don't use as much energy as others, and fat comes from unused energy.

Genes also control our appetitie/satiety, how easily we put on muscle, how easily we put on fat, and a bunch of other things that affect exercise and the mind.

Its a definite choice, especially if morbidly obese. To say otherwise is ridiculous most obese people dont exercise at all.

For them to call it a disability is a joke. For someone fat to get a job over someone else because of the ADA is stupid as well

  • 11.29.2012 10:39 AM PDT

It's a combination of the two. Sure genetics have something to do with it but when you eat fast food all the time and don't exercise at all then that's your fault more than genetics.

  • 11.29.2012 10:41 AM PDT

I believe it is both but in the end it the person's choice if they want to be fit.

Genetics play a big part, and so does the environment. Unlike things like attraction or body type, fat is determined by actively eating more food than your body uses. Some people have predispositions to having high appetites, but for most it is the result of being fed too much in developement, causing the body to adjust to the high intake levels

I guess what i'm really saying is that I find it highly unlikely that half the population of the US has genes that cause appetite to be so strong they can't control it. Obese people especially really cross that line.

I'll just leave this here.

If you're fat, don't blame your metabolism. The difference among even extreme opposite ends of the scale are less than most cheeseburgers.

Nobody chooses to be fat. Therefore, I think people become fat as a result of:

-psychological problems
-economics problems (no money for healthy food/ no time to cook healthy food)
-lack of knowledge of nutrition
- lack of care.
