They're the oldest game company around today.

That's exactly why they'll die.

Nope, their handhelds are extremely profitable, the DS is basically a money printing machine for them. Sony on the other hand is pretty much failing on all fronts, the only profitable thing they have right now is their insurance division.

You know what'd be great? If after Sony dies, SEGA got back into the console market, as a way of saying fek u to Sony

You are comparing a brand new console in its release week with limited amounts to a console that has been around for 7 years going on sale for Black Friday.

That is an awful comparison.

I can assure you it won't be priced at 300$. If I remember correctly, the 360 was priced at 400$. It only makes sense for the next one to be priced the same.

The xbox 360 was priced at $400 due to the hardware in it and the market Microsoft was going for. Even with that price they were losing money initially which they later made up. The new xbox is aimed at a different market which is expected due to the shift in Microsoft's marketing over the years. They aren't going after as high of tech based on what leaks have shown. The GPU is going to be far from impressive and thus the console will be cheaper. I don't doubt at all the price will be $300. So simply put going off of the xbox 360's launch isn't a good benchmark for the new xbox.

Microsoft have been focusing alot more on their kinect technology recently. If their new console revolves around Kinect, I definitely won't be a buyer.

Rumor is they are going to have two consoles one for gaming the other more for entertainment. Though I doubt they would make it entirely revolve around Kinect unless they are completely retarded.

I have XBL with lots of things on the dash board to use but I don't. Nobody will force you to use it.

Key word was revolves. Telling me to not use something a console which revolves around kinect is like telling me to not use motion control on the wii.

I highly doubt that Nintendo will think about switching solely to handhelds unless Microsoft decides to release a new console that's better than the Xbox 360. Think about it, a new console that's an improved Xbox 360 could dominate the market.

MS and Sony are expected to release consoles either next year or in 2014. The real issue that Nintendo faces is that the main source of their income with the wii will more than likely not buy a Wii U. The casual market that the wii grabbed will not find another gimmick with the Wii U, and that may really hurt Nintendo this time around. That along with the marginal hardware bump could stand to be an issue over the next few years.

As always though, as long as the software keeps coming they will most likely be fine.

EXACTLY my thoughts. If you have a 7 year old console with 1,000,000+ available for $150-$300 compared to a week old console with 100,000+ available at $350-$500 it's pretty obvious which one is going to sell more.

*Numbers were made up but you get the idea*

Nintendo was great back in the day

This, except it still is.

The Wii U got out sold by an older console on 1 day of sales compared to a week.

That's pretty much the nail in Nintendo's coffin.

Yeah, when your console gets outsold by a 6-7 year old console on the biggest retail day of the year, you're in for rough times ahead

For one, these are United States sales. Nintendo still maintains its largest market share outside of America, like in Japan.

For two, volume of console sales has nothing to do with profitability of consoles. Wii U sales at that price point are profitable - XBox is making next to nothing margin wise on highly discounted 360 sales - and they know it, they are just trying to get rid of inventory, especially near the end of the console's life.

Nintendo definitely still dominates the handheld market. They're not exactly in financial trouble.

Their difficulty is that they have decided to pursue a "novelty console" approach - in that each new console relies upon sort of novelty feature - and audiences simply haven't responded to the novelty included in the Wii U.

Let's take a look.

DS - Dual screens, touch-sensitive pad.
Wii - Motion control.
3DS - 3D gameplay without special glasses.
Wii U - iPad esque controller that enables handheld and/or dual screen gameplay.

Wii U's novelty is pretty lackluster compared to the preceding three consoles.
