OP is clueless. Wii U's were sold out everywhere and remain on back order.

The inevitable OP response: Well how come the 360 outsold it 2:1 then!

My answer: The Wii U is a new product and limit quantities are available. In other words, Nintendo is manufacturing as many consoles as possible to keep up with demand. Thus, less consoles were available during Black Friday compared to Xbox 360s, PS3s, and Nintendo Wii's. O yeah OP, the Wii even outsold the Wii U during Black Friday because more units were available for retail.

If a man is not willing to die for something then he is unfit to live.

Good riddance. As for it being sold out and on back-order I find that funny since I was at a Sam's Club here in San Antonio and they had several Deluxe and regular WiiUs for sale. Give me 500 dollars and I'll go get that foot rest for you.

The Game

That is sad.
Not sad because Nintendo might die. Sad because a 6 year old console beat its ass in sales.
I'd be ashamed.

I had a feeling something was up. Seeing as how it is your answer, it could be wrong. It makes sense though.

Alright, I saw this was discussed earlier today and I was really surprised no one mentioned this.

During Black Friday, new consoles always get outsold by old ones.

Its because of the deals for the older consoles, cheaper with bundles and obviously supply issues for new consoles.

When the Wii launched, it's first week was 476k according to NPD.

That same week, guess what the PS2 sold? 970k.

Put's things into perspective, doesn't it?
This makes sense.

I saw $200 Xbox Bundles on Black Friday. For many consumers, all they needed to know was that Xbox is $100-150 cheaper, and in stock.

Will Nintendo ever go the way of Sega? As in seize hardware development and become exclusively a software developer/publisher? Probably not. Nintendo is very well off financially. Yes, people on game forums/sites constantly downplay Nintendo, but that does not mean anything.

I say, as long as Nintendo continues to pump out masterful exclusive games, they can do whatever they want. Sega's dropped out because they want broke. I don't see Nintendo going broke any time soon. Be more worried about Sony, seriously.

Pootis

Christmas. Do you really think that all under-12 year old kids aren't "asking" (forcing) their parents to buy it?

Although it would have been better if they had any sort of commercial, I know lots of people that don't even know about its existence, and I've never seen any sort of marketing product outside of the Internet. Hell even my 3DS didn't tell me about its release.
Also I haven't even seen a single copy of it in any store I've been.

OP's rhetoric is a plague amongst the forum. No, Nintendo isn't going anywhere. Stop doubting them. They proved they can compete and dominate with the Wii. It will happen again, with time.

True, but they actually made a profit off of their sales. When microsoft sells an xbox, they lose about $100 dollars. Nintendo makes about $10 off of a Wii U, and about $10 on a wii. Couple that with the decent amount of games being sold, and their profit margins are still flying higher than Microsofts or Sony's.

So the world might be mended...

Nintendo actually doesn't make a profit off the WiiU alone, they make a profit if they also sell 1 game with the WiiU.

For those looking to vent, get proper advice, or give it to those in need.

Well that's some hyperbole.

First thing I tell people is that this is a marathon. And in the case of the Wii U a marathon that will go on for five or so years that started less than two weeks ago.

Second, why did this happen? There are a few factors. One is that the supply of Wii U consoles has been getting eaten up since release. The lack of them led to an increase in demand for Wii U substitutes (360 and PS3).

So no, this isn't the end of Nintendo. That's a ridiculous notion.

Ah. Still, that number is three I believe for the Xbox or PS3. Along with that, Xbox and PS3 games are $60 instead of $50 Wii. I'm surprised that the WiiU went down that route with $60 games, as well. I thought nintendo was supposed to be the nice company.

The 360 and PS3 are much much more profitable than the Wii U. Neither Microsoft or Sony are losing money in the home console business. I don't think that should be surprising given how long the 360 and PS3 have been in production.

The market is shifting. Children no longer like the colorful environments and relative nonviolence of Nintendo's biggest games. They like brown and bloom iron sights run and gun expletive riddled mature games for mature gamers such as them.

Basically, Xbox is the new children's console and CoD is the new Mario. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Whatever the case may be, Nintendo needs to realize this shift before they make the same mistake as Sony and assume that they'll continue to sell on brand name alone.

  • 11.29.2012 2:51 PM PDT

I don't like Nintendo, but it's completely reasonable that the 360 outsold the WiiU. The 360 has a massive library of great games, many of them being dirt cheap, it hosts timed exclusives for CoD DLC, and was only selling for 100$. The WiiU is much more expensive, does not (to my knowledge) have CoD available at all, and has a far smaller library of games. Wait for it to get some better games.

It is possible to commit no errors and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.

Cheeto is the only one among you that doesn't suck.

Nintendo is definitely suffering. They've got a serious lack of originality, and their new direction seems to be entirely based on gimmicks, rather than actual merit.

The Wii U presents an opportunity to change that, but they still have a ways to reverse their trend of stagnation and repetition.

Microsoft is, indeed losing money.
They may report a profit overall, but that only happens after you factor in accessories, games, the exorbitant prices of XBOX Live, etc.
Nintendo has made a larger profit with a poorer, cheaper console and a wider, more casual user base. However, many of their future games are going down the hardcore route. I think that the only thing they have to do to destroy all the competition is remove that negative stigma hardcore gamers hold for them.
If they can pull that off, gamers will flock to the WiiU when it starts getting some good exclusives.
