True, but they actually made a profit off of their sales. When microsoft sells an xbox, they lose about $100 dollars. Nintendo makes about $10 off of a Wii U, and about $10 on a wii. Couple that with the decent amount of games being sold, and their profit margins are still flying higher than Microsofts or Sony's.

The 360 and PS3 are much much more profitable than the Wii U. Neither Microsoft or Sony are losing money in the home console business. I don't think that should be surprising given how long the 360 and PS3 have been in production.

wait I thought Sony was losing money over the PS3 and Vita, and that the Wii and DS were the highest selling gaming consoles compared to the others.

Microsoft is, indeed losing money.
They may report a profit overall, but that only happens after you factor in accessories, games, the exorbitant prices of XBOX Live, etc.
Nintendo has made a larger profit with a poorer, cheaper console and a wider, more casual user base. However, many of their future games are going down the hardcore route. I think that the only thing they have to do to destroy all the competition is remove that negative stigma hardcore gamers hold for them.
If they can pull that off, gamers will flock to the WiiU when it starts getting some good exclusives.

Well if we were having this discussion in 2005 I'd say you were right.

You just posted a seven year old article.

Vita loses money, PS3 does not. The Wii still remains the best selling current gen console. The PS2 is still the best selling home console. No home console comes even close to the PS2 install base.

I'm pretty sure the PS2 is still slightly ahead of the DS life to date sales. Something like 160 million + for the PS2 and 152 million + for the DS.

does not (to my knowledge) have CoD available at all

It actually does, and it looks pretty damn cool I have to say.
(IGN video ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBAkVzTuHr0) and yes you can use the "pro" controller to play it.

I want a WiiU so bad right now.

If I ever get AIDS, I'm going to sleep with another AIDS person so my AIDS cancel each other out, or I'm going to make the AIDS I already have worse.

Yes, it also took 6 years for the Xbox 360 to finally make a profit.

Wait, Wii U is actually considered a console?

No bull -blam!-, I thought it was an expansion for the Wii. if the U is the next-gen console for Nintendo, then they either need to step up their game, fire a few people, and actually look at the market, or suffer a slow, agonizing death.

Unfortunately, those who will be pained the most will be the fans, myself included. Nintendo was practically my childhood, it'd suck to see such a once-great company kick it so embarassibgly.

My aunts, uncles, and grandparents bought a Wii. Nobody I know bought a WiiU.

Major props to my hommie Sheeef. He made Recon possible for me. Long time recovering emails and passwords. And it was his. lol.

Nintendo needs to die. Or just freakin merge with either Sony or Microsoft.

Ohai, I'm Loscocco (pronounced Loss-cocoa). I'm a college student (computer science major), 3D animator, and long-time Halo player.

Nintendo flopped when they thought it was a good idea to put all of their faith into a gimmick (motion controls) and make it a standard for almost every single game on their console to be centered around.

Did they all buy a Wii in the first ten days of release?

  • 11.29.2012 4:06 PM PDT

No, but I never said they did. The fact is that the older audience that the Wii brought in was wooed by the easy to use controller. The touch screen mini controller is not something I can see any old person working. My grandparents can swing a remote to simulate a sport but they can't use screen tech to save their lives. I can imagine that is true for many older people.

Nintendo was great back in the day

Mario Kart, Smash Bros....

There's that key term "Back in the day".

They can't compete now, not if they plan to reuse Mario, Zelda, and Metroid over and over again. Milking a long dead cow will only hinder you after so long.

Remember those times when we all had something better to be doing, but didn't do it? Those were good times. Gooood times

Meh. I'll buy a Wii U when there is two of the following:
A) LoZ
B) Super Smash Bros
C) A price drop

Pretty sure the Wii is the best selling console of all time. I'd hardly call that a flop

I am a monument to all your sins

Nintendo is now irrelevant. They have a few nostalgia titles, but nothing worth a new console. What kept the wii alive were the motion controls, but the Wiiu really doesn't bring anything new to the table.

They're the oldest game company around today.

As a company vs video game companies, yes. They're over 100 years old.

As a video game company, nope.

Wii U has not even been out long. Are you idiotic?

"The Xbox 360 sold twice as many consoles at the Wii U did in its launch week."

Are you retarded?

again, not enough to buy a console for. Play Station and MS have way more good games, and the WiiU will become obsolete when the other next gen consoles come out. By buying a Wii you are limiting what you can play.
