Subject: Being overweight is a lifestyle choice, not a medical issue

Yes it's this thread again. I'm sorry, but I continue to hear people say that being fat is a medical condition or caused by genes.

Being overweight or overly skinny for that matter is simply a function of calories and exercise. It's a lifestyle choice. Eat more = get fatter. Eat less = lose weight. Common sense.

There are some rare medical conditions that can affect metabolism, but they are just that, rare.

As for the so called "fat gene." Studies have shown that most of us have it! Studies have also shown that this "fat gene" does not make you fat, it only influences appetite and mental behavior.

So please, if you are overweight, you are only doing yourself a disservice and lying to yourself by making excuses.

Being fat is a lifestyle choice, not something handed down to you from your fat parents. Stop the BS.

It's a combination of the 2. Sure genetics have some to do with it mostly in the metabolic processes but it's mostly lifestyle. If you eat a lot and don't exercise you're going to be fat. There parents don't pass a fat gene on to them they pass bad eating habits on to them.

There isn't just one fat gene...there are lots of gene defects associated with obesity. OP clearly has no idea what he/she is talking about.

I think that a lot of obesity has to do with the Western worlds high fat diet but lack of need for exercise. It's less of a lifestyle choice and more of a cultural trend. Sure, the individuals could exercise more and eat healthier but that's not going to happen on a large-population basis.

My troll sense is tingling.

I started losing weight quite a bit recently and made no lifestyle changes. In fact I've exercised less.

Explain that.

So why did you waste your time posting?

I'm allowed to have an opinion and I'm allowed to create threads. I do so very rarely here considering the many years I have been a member here. Grow up.

Who. The. Hell. Cares? (Not you OP, you make some valid points) I don't understand why people just try to blaim being fat on something instead of working to fix it. Regardless of the cause, being fat is more unhealthy than if you were a "healthy average". This is undeniable.

Yes, like I said, these issues can affect metabolic rate. But at the end of the day, calories are calories. No medical side effect can prevent someone from starving to death.

Floodians seem abnormally righteous about being close-minded about obesity. Yes it's often a lack of willpower that is the root of the problem, but to say it isn't a medical issue is really just dumb.

There's no "fat gene" that makes you fat. There are genes that may make it easier for the calories you eat to be stored as fat unless you exercise regularly, but it's the person's fault for not actively exercising when they know they have the gene.

It's like people who say their family has a history of smoking addiction or heart problems. If you know this and you choose to smoke or make lifestyle choices that stress your heart, then you can't whine about how you are a victim.

It is a medical issue once the person is fat though. Being fat affects pretty much every aspect of a person's life, both socially and biologically.

There are also genes that control your appetite and satiety, basically telling you if you're hungry or not.

There is a "fat gene." It was identified in the last few years, but scientists still do not fully understand what it does. The leading theory is that it affects mental behaviors, not whether or not your body stores food as fat.

Obesity is a medical issue, but it is not caused by medical issues. Feel me?
