Subject: Being overweight is a lifestyle choice, not a medical issue

Let me start off by saying nobody wants to be fat. Therefore, I attribute people being fat to:

-psychological problems
-economic problems (no money for healthy food/ no time to cook healthy food)
-lack of knowledge of nutrition
- lack of care.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

Okay?

Let's for the moment, accept and agree to the the OP's premise that being overweight is solely due to personal choices (or lifestyle if you prefer, but it's really a non-specific term).

So? If it is a choice, what's the problem? People choose to do things, good things, bad things, smart things, stupid things, things with consequence, things without consequence, all of the time.

Gaming is a (I hate to say it, but I am following the OP premise) a "lifestyle choice". It can have impact on the life of the person who chooses it, either positive or negative, but it is their choice.

So is fashion, so is who you date, so is your job, your car, your best friend, your... they're all choices. And they can result in something that the individual is willing to accept, not happy about, and then they have.... you guessed it, another choice to make. Whether or not to do something about their previous choice.

So, if being overweight is ALWAYS a "lifestyle choice"... yeah? So what?

Eat more = get fatter. Eat less = lose weight. Common sense.

this is 100% factual.

This should be published in scientific and medical journals everywhere.

There is a point where eating less will only hurt you. Some fat people don't actually eat that much more, but literally don't do anything more than live to expend energy.

And eating more does not mean you will get fatter, ever heard of the Olympics?

Don't disagree.

But as society now tends to spread the affects of that choice around on others (healthcare, for instance), rather than solely burdeoning that person with dealing with the consequences of their choices, then society probably has a right to start at the very least dissuading or controlling their choices.

IMO, you can't have personal freedom with socialized consequences.

That's not entirely correct.

If you take in more calories than you burn, you will be fat.

Floodians seem abnormally righteous about being close-minded about obesity. Yes it's often a lack of willpower that is the root of the problem, but to say it isn't a medical issue is really just dumb.

Obesity is a medical issue, but it is not caused by medical issues. Feel me?

No, because it can be.

I have no issue with people making their own personal choices in life. I'm just tired of people using excuses for their weight due to ignorance. People actually have begun to believe that obesity is some sort of a persistent medical condition or disability. They really believe it.

Be fat all you want, but own it! (generally speaking to all)

I meant to just quote the common sense part. Taking in any amount of calories will be fairly bad if nothing is done to burn them off.

For like 1/10th of 1% of the fat population?

I am the God Emprah of Mankind.

Deal with it.

Should we yell at clinically depressed people to stop being depressed, too?

  • 11.29.2012 1:01 PM PDT

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

From the other fat thread:

Under normal circumstances, a persons weight is manageable. Due to genetics, it may be harder for some than it is for others, but it is still on the individual.

Acting like genes, predispostions, and medical issues do not play into it is utterly moronic, but yes, under normal circumstances it is on the individual and their drive to prevent themselves from becomming overweight.

ISU Cyclones!

Holy -blam!- people I know it's fun to prop up your self-esteem by making fun of fatties but reality is not all of them are because they're lazy slobs.

Those genetics and medical conditions are quite serious and in many cases are impossible to overcome at all or without expensive medical treatments said person can't afford even while living healthy.

This is not opinion. This is medical fact.

Where did you get your medical degree?

You make it sound like obese people can stop eating and still remain obese. That's nonsense.

I'm confused as to why you think that blatantly fabricated statistic is relevant to anything but to show that you don't know what you're talking about.

Starvation diets are proven to be ineffective methods of weight loss. Wrong again.

I went hungry (I.E. NO FOOD AT ALL) approximately 2 days a week for almost a year. I lost 10 pounds. that's it. 10.

That might be the single most worst argument ever. Attacking credibility without any proof of your own in the original argument followed by complete strawman.

0/10.
