Black Ops 2 and Halo 4 had huge success as far as sales go. They were the top 2 games played in the previous week. Obviously, people enjoy them

Sales means nothing in this argument. The casual gamers are the majority, so developers are going to cater to the majority.

The ones who enjoy them are the casuals who like over-simplified gameplay that rewards you for simply playing instead of having skill. Those gamers make up the majority now.

Over simplified? Are you missing the definition of simple? Which is more simple -

Halo 2 (jump into a game and kill people with the weapons at hand; play campaign or custom games),

or

Halo 4 (choose your weapon, secondary weapon, grenade, perks and an armor ability; jump into a game; kill enemies; get ordinance; or play Forge or Spartan Ops or Campaign or custom games and edit your appearance with a variety of customization options)

The root of the problem seems to be that you don't like Halo 4 because it has more features, instead of being more simple.

Just remember that no matter how terrible you feel, or how much you want to let go, there are people who care about you and love you.

Blah Blah multiplayer is everything, Blah Blah casuals are cancer, Blah Blah games these days suck.

I didn't say any of this.
*"Casuals are negatively impacting some game series"
*Doesn't get that I'm taking about the general Flood

Yep, because video games were made strictly for tryhards. Anyone who wants to play just for fun deserves to be burned at the stake.

Life?
I have the internet and Doctor Who; i don't need a life.

has it ever occurred to you that maybe targeting a larger audience is what happens when an industry grows such as the gaming industry has? if having a successful gaming industry means spending less money on story because as a species we have shorter attention spans than Dory the fish and more money on graphics and making it look like CoD because that's what sells, then so be it. there will always bee good games if you go looking for them.

>constant stream of original AAA games with good stories and innovative gameplay.
>successful, booming industry swimming in money because everybody buys the games.

pick one.

and, quite frankly i find the whole idea of 'casual' gamers disgusting.
pretending that you're somehow a 'better' gamer than someone else because you play for 'better' reasons than them.
get over yourself.

Halo's problem is that they add features that are gimmicks designed to help bad players out. Other series dumb their games down by removing or changing features.

I think it's cute that you assume that I think that I am "superior" to the casuals. I only stated that I didn't appreciate the industry's growing desire to appease casuals more than others. Is it wrong that I want games which appeal to my interests?

-Bungie All Star Nameplate Winner
-Forgehub: Hub of the Dead III Winner
-Custom Games host for TheHaloForgeEpidemic
-Halotracks: ex staff

"In peace the sons bury their fathers, but in war the fathers bury their sons." -Croesus

I think the problem people don't understand is that casualization makes a game balanced for everybody, which destroys the branch of players that have spent more time then average to obtain skill in a game. You can make a competitive game casual, you can't make a casual game competitive.

They still exist. Id Software thrives off of competitives. Halo 4 can be turned into an equal starts game, which I'm sure MLG is working on right now.

If games ship with the ability to make a competitive game fairly easily, then what's the problem?

I have to agree. It seems however developers think making their game like cod or casualizing it will make customers happy but it is really pissing off their fan base.

1. i wasn't referring to you specifically, merely to anyone who uses the term.
2. there are no 'casual' or 'hardcore' gamers, only ordinary gamers and stuck-up individuals who can't understand why other people don't want to play the games they want to play; and feel the need to shout about it day and night on a piddly internet forum like they think it'll change anything.
3. i also think it's cute that you pick on the smallest point i made, rather than that whole main part at the top.

Roll the dice, try again.

I am honestly surprised that this hasn't been posted yet. It's essentially what you're all arguing about.

I can't wait until the gaming market crashes again. Casuals are like a bubble and it's only a matter of time until that bubble pops.

If I ever get AIDS, I'm going to sleep with another AIDS person so my AIDS cancel each other out, or I'm going to make the AIDS I already have worse.

The campaign was solid? it was Master Chief pushing buttons for 5 hours with the Dead Space 2 story.

Ah the beauty of not playing consoles only anymore. PC gamers have so much more variety and don't have to worry about casuals and try hards. (unless your in the competitive gaming scene)

You know it's people like you that make me not want to game on the PC even though I know it's superior. Cut the high and mighty crap will ya?

  • 11.29.2012 3:30 PM PDT

I don't have a problem with "casuals". I have a problem with developers turning a fast pace FPS into a dice game where you can choose which rigged dice to start with.

I can give an example right now of a franchise that has bitten the casual bullet. Ninja gaiden. The first one was hard and the second one even harder when you put it on the highest difficulty but then came the third one which seemed so much easier then the first two.

That has nothing to do with the audience. That was a developer choice. NG3, also, was the first of the new NG to NOT have Tomonobu Itagaki at the head. So to quote an earlier poster...

You look around. You fire your weapon before you realize.
Its just me. I fall and you walk up. You cry why.
When i pop up. You look at me in wonder. I say,"ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL."
You bend to my will and go to a cliff, walk off, and fall.
The last thing you hear is me stating as fact,"All will fail the battle of life, you just went early"

Since when has there been a non-casual Mario game?

Some of them can take several days to beat in my experience. They are not difficult but have some amount of challenge.
