And Harper makes a mockery of Canada again. Still, the overwhelming support is telling. I for one am happy to see this.

I'm curious to see how the PLO deals with Hamas, seeing that they have extremely different views.

War never decides who is right; only who is left.

Woah that's crazy
Actually didn't see that happening for a long time

  • 11.29.2012 3:14 PM PDT

I'm surprised.

As long as they stay where they are this is good.

Cheeto is the only one among you that doesn't suck.

Not really. It doesn't change much of anything. Israel and Hamas are still going to butt heads, and the entire region is still destabilized from the recent regime changes and the instability in Syria.

It's a nice symbolic move, but it changes nothing.

I dont really care, but they dont deserve any of the land back that Israel won in a war in which Palestine was the initial aggressor.

I hope this doesn't cause more tensions between Israel and the Arab Nations.

PLO is like a decentralized group of factions that includes Mr. Abbas's political party. They're recognized as the legitimate governing body for Palestine by the UN and recognize the right for Israel to exist alongside Palestine.

Hamas is another group that governs in the Gaza Strip. They're an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood and i guess more to the right. There are some legitimate criticisms towards morally dubious actions on the part of Hamas. The PLO affiliated Fatah govern the West Bank and are social democrats. Neither are the Taliban or Al-Queda.

I disagree. Recognition by the UN gives Palestine and Hamas something akin to responsibility, they now need to prove that this recognition is well-placed and merited.

Sure it might not mean much to Israel but this is something that Palestine has wanted badly, they would be foolish to resume any terrorist attacks again Israel now.

Palestine has never engaged in a Palestinian initiated war. They have participated in a war engaged by the Arab League against Israel, but only while under Egyptian occupation. However, the last forty years or so has been more or less Israeli aggression when it comes to Palestinian territory.

Egypt should give the Palestinians the Sinai Peninsula. A country as tiny as Israel shouldn't have to give up so much land.

Just because they're recognized doesn't mean they won't stop what they're doing.
The fact of the matter is, Palestine has no truly central governing body, and has a lot of radical elements that are out of their control.

Hamas will continue to attack Israel as they please, and Palestine won't be able to do a thing to stop them.

Like I said, this changes nothing, unless the recognized Palestinian government calls for UN support to help stabilize their country and put down radical elements. That's not going to happen, so nothing will change.
