13.72 billion years in the making.

On December 1st, 2012, I met Neil deGrasse Tyson. I shook the man's hand, and even made him laugh. Not much else to do with my life now.

So what is the point of hypothesizing about it? You immediately reach an impenetrable wall.

...What are you talking about? Somebody posted "If the universe was infinite, then the night sky would be entirely covered in stars." This isn't true, because light has a finite speed, and the observable universe is an area 93 billion light years in diameter that we can observe because the light of objects within that space has had enough time to reach us. I'm not "hypothesizing" about anything.

The universe is infinite. That means that it contains infinite space. That means that it contains infinite events.
Your logic falls apart around the third sentence

An infinite space does not necessarily have infinite things in it

I don't think you understand the concept of infinity. In a truly infinite universe, infinite space means infinite events.

Infinite space does not mean an infine number of "events" - something infinite does not necessarily have infinite elements of every quantity within it.

For example, it can be shown through quantum mechanics that the energy levels of an atom are quantised (discrete, specific energy levels) and that there an infinite number of energy levels within an atom ranging from the ground state (n = 1, where n is the principle quantum number) to the ionisation state (n = infinity). However, the energy difference between the ionisation state and ground state is, obviously, not infinite itself - for a standard Hydrogen atom, if one follows the derivations using the Rydberg Series then one will find that this energy difference is ~13.6 eV.

This is just one example of a finite quantity existing within an infinite system. But, anyway, I do not know why I am explaining this to you - you are the person who stated that you "don't agree with the idea of science". Ridiculous.

Infinity is endless. Therefore, we don't know what extends past what we can see. And because of this ignorance, we can only assume that anything and everything lies beyond.
That's not how it works

An infinite universe does not have to contain infinite things simply because it could. I just disproved that by showing that it was perfectly logical to have an infinite space with only a single object contained in it.
But how could we possibly know that only a single object is contained within an infinite space?
This isn't an actual observation, I am merely demonstrating that it is logically possible for it to be the case. If we were confronted with such a universe that we could observe then we would not know for sure whether the cube was the only thing, however, it would not be unreasonable to think so.

It was a hypothetical made to disprove your theory.

I was referring to the paradox you linked, which I assumed you were advocating.

It's ridiculous to be more concerned with people than theoretical scientific proofs?

Oh, no, no, absolutely not. I'm sorry if I gave off that impression. Olbers' paradox is completely invalid.

You know science is done basically for the pure benefit of mankind, right?

Let's not get off topic here, get back to why your theory is wrong.

Once again, you entirely miss the point that those "theoretical scientific proofs" often lead to real life applications which improve upon the lives of billions. But let's not start this again.

You listed one negative and two positives, and the first one is debatable. The fact is that without science, you wouldn't have any of the technology you enjoy today. Science is not some mystical worldview. It's just a way to not fool ourselves. You might as well say you don't like learning.

The Universe demands to be noticed, to be seen, and dutifully noted.

What use all those incredible firework dimensions if no eye fixes and reflects, no brain takes notes, no heart moves with passion at the display?

NASA answers the silent cry of the Cosmos for recognition.

NASA is the witness and we fellow witnesses to the endless deeps.

It's pretty hard to obtain a direct estimate of the size of the universe when it is expanding at a rate greater than the speed of light and the fastest means of transmission we have are electromagnetic waves.

  • 11.29.2012 4:41 PM PDT

Its not my actions that define me, but under what light I'm being looked upon.

Me after a physics lecture "So what you're saying is, non of it actually exists"
Yellow box "and I thought we were crazy"

I think you meant everything that can happen is happening (in a theoretical infinite universe). If theirs a zero percent chance of something it doesn't matter if it has infinite scenarios it can be in, it will never change.

Hah, good luck with that. I used to subscribe to arXiv's physics, mathematics, and computer science rss feeds, but they were way too far above me. I can semi-understand many of the cs ones, but physics and math were overwhelming.

Admittedly, yes, one must've studied or must be studying physics/mathematics to a high level (post-graduate) in order to understand the majority of papers there - I understand quite a few of the particle physics / quantum mechanics ones, but that's because I am a particle physicist!

The limit on speed imposed by special relativity is only limited to objects moving through 'space', as vague a definition of that is. This is why we see galaxies recede from us at a speed greater than c.
