There are many artistic elements that go into play such as story, soundtrack, environmental design, etc., and many developers go through several art courses to make these games come to life.

The actual game play shouldn't be considered art even if it is an artistic game (i.e. drawn to life). However, the things I mentioned above should be judged on artistic merit.

There are many beautifully rendered, scored, and designed games out there.

I am a firm believer in video games being a form of art. Look at games such as Journey, Bioshock, Shadow of Colossus, etc.

Games aren't just distractions for a few hours, a good game will pull you into a completely different world to experience and enjoy while you forget about the woes of the real world. Each world has their own unique look and feel, the characters are unique and diverse, and you can change this world and develop connections with these diverse people.

I could go on for awhile but I'll just stop here. Short answer: Yes, I believe video games can be constituted as an art form.

The black wind begins to blow... Okay... give me your best shot... If you're prepared for the void!

Damn right they should be considered art. Just look at Shadow of the Colossus!

EAch world has their own unique look and feel, the characters are unique and diverse.

Did you do that to imply something related to EA?

Nah, stupid typos.

What if the gameplay is something that makes you think, and be creative, like Portal? (portal is in the exhibit, by the way.)

I'm not necessarily qualified to make an objectively definitive set of criteria to judge video games on their artistic merit, so the above was just my opinion. I wouldn't consider gameplay to be artistic in any way even if it were art based, so I find it odd that Portal is in the exhibit. Maybe they're judging its concept on originality, which could be considered artistic criteria.
