Subject: A small request for Bungie.next

For the love of peaches can we make it so that I can properly double space after sentences without Bungie.net truncating my double spaces down to a single space? When I was a child, I was taught to double space after every sentence to make it clear where one sentence ended and another sentence began. Archaic though that practice might be, I just see little reason to prevent people from being able to double space if they want to.

I'm not interested in forcing anyone else to change the way they write, I just find that it makes my often incredibly verbose posts a little more readable. I have great faith that the webteam is going to hit Bungie.next out of the ballpark, and out of all the complex features that people have asked for, this seems like an easy one to implement.

Is there anybody else who would want this?

Break down, every single one of you.

How about also being able to indent our paragraphs? It is proper English, after all.

I also double space after every sentence, and would appreciate this addition.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

The Black Chapter!

I'd like that. A bit of well placed ASCII art is a beautiful thing, all we need is ninjas to deal with the fools wot post picard everywhere.

I was helping at a primary school today, and couldn't help but be annoyed at the teacher for wasting her time teaching the children to do that. It confused many, is generally absent in word processed documents, and makes comprehension more difficult - particularly in our age of short instant messages/emails.

My only issue is to change usernames. It's 2012 I would hope I would be able to change it by now.

I don't see the problem here. Although it is proper english, it's not really important in typed documents, and especially on a forum. One change I'd like to see is some sort of notification system for messages, and maybe even events and announcements for groups.

It wouldn't be a toggling thing. If you don't want to double space after a period, you don't type two spaces. We don't have a toggle option to use the & key if you would prefer to type out "and", right?

Double spacing after a sentence? I've never heard of that... I've always been taught to just put one space after a sentence.

It's a thing they used to teach people in keyboard/typing classes. They do not do so anymore to my knowledge. I was one of the last years in my school to be taught it and it was as an afterthought. More of a "some people do this; do it if you want" type of thing.

I also still use the term carriage return, and should have been born ~1900.

It's to do with HTML formatting and specifications. Double spaces aren't valid HTML.

How can a teacher waste her time teaching proper English/grammar? That is her job. Also, the short messages that have become common in the past decade don't commonly use proper grammar. Just because it is popular doesn't mean it is right.

I don't like indenting. It looks messy.

I laugh because of all the posts I've made I've never caught that the double spacing I always default to gets reverted to single spacing. I learn new things every day.

Well crap in a handbasket, that complicates things. I had just assumed that it was a thing implemented by the webteam to cut down on ASCII art or something, I wasn't aware it was a limitation of HTML, my programming knowledge doesn't extend to the realm of HTML or website design (though I do know some C#!).

All the same, make it happen anyways Bungie!

Excessive whitespace doesn't invalidate a HTML document, browsers just truncate it down to a single space (ASCII 0x20).

That being said, if you wanted double spacing, it would need to be controlled with extra markup, like non-breaking spaces or wrapped sentences (ie. span tags). But then, you run into all sorts of problems.

If you use a regex to add in a nbsp, how do you identify it? Is it "\. {2}"? Maybe "\. {2,}\S"?

If you try to identify sentences... what is a sentence? Where do they begin and end? Remember you're dealing with user-generated content here; it's not always going to be correct.

eg.
This is a sentence.
Where does this sentence end.And this one begin?
This site is Bungie.net.
Hello

4ello
&(1337);#
The quick brown fox

etc...

A part of me wants to take a crack at Puma and Hyle and tell them to stop acting like this.

Another part of me wants to say that proper grammar should be allowed if people really want to use it. When i first starte out here i always got hung up on not being able to indent paragraphs. I've never been one to double space after a period though.

Most of me doesn't care enough about spacing and indents to type anything else in the post. I mean, does it really matter?

I'm indifferent, either way.

Puma and Hyle are both Silly Geese.
