I love how holiday trees look. All the lights and stuff, with the little stars at top. Yup, holiday trees are A-OK in my book.

It's the principle of the thing. Christmas is a stolen pagan holiday but since Christians took it over, Christmas is widely considered a religious holiday, and for a public place to endorse a religion in ANY WAY is a violation of the separation between church and state.

Would you not be offended if a public place had a satanic ritual on it?

That would be SWEET!

Why would I want to change to saying Happy Holidays, rather than saying Merry Christmas? I mean just because someone does not like it they can't expect me to change it!

I gaze upon the stars and see the majesty that is the universe.

EGO mos bulla astrum.

Personally if someone takes it offensively they need to grow up. I could take their holidays offensively but I don't. So some people need to grow a self esteem.

Please do not send me group invites.

I only say "Merry Christmas" on Christmas day. Because any other day is not Christmas. Other than Christmas day, I say "happy holidays" which covers everything from Thanksgiving through New Years.

I think we should all resort to saying "Happy Halodays."

Fine with me. It's a safe catch-all that covers everything people choose to celebrate.

Agreed.

If a minority is offended by a Christian belief, the Christian ought to check his privilege and be more culturally sensitive. If a Christian is offended by a minority's belief, he's bigoted, intolerant, and ought to check his privilege.

Hooray for political correct behavior!

What the hell is going on in this post?

  • 11.29.2012 11:41 PM PDT

Now let's get down to business, I don't got no time to play around, what is this?

I don't celebrate Christmas for religious reasons, it's just a holiday, and the tree is just a tree, so don't see why it'd upset anyone.

I'd like examples of both sides of this as I've honestly never seen the second one happen.

I also actually haven't seen someone get offended by Christian beliefs, but I have seen people get upset that government money goes towards celebrating one religion's holiday, but not others, as that is a direct violation of the separation of church and state.

Yes, advocating one religion in the absence of others (in the public sphere) is offensive

No one else is really being exclusivity, everyone has a right to practice and believe what they want.

Wouldn't the act of preventing people from celebrating their beliefs be just as if not more offensive than a pine tree with ornaments?
Nope, people can still celebrate all they want privately, no one is prevented from celebrating anything. Everyone can still follow the respective beliefs without forcing the "predominant" one on others

Debates are like jaw breakers; you eat away at one layer, only to find another lying beneath. Also, they cause people to choke up and die sometimes. True story.

I don't think people are offended that there is a tree, just that there is ONLY a tree. Put up a Menorah or something too and people will calm down about the trees.

The thing is Christmas seems to be loosely tied to one belief now-a-days.

It is a symbol of the holiday season and traditional to America culture.

It is not something meant to offend someone's culture, it is part of the scenery.

Except for the whole CHRIST in its name and all, with SAINT Nick and all that...

Think about it some more.

If you were here and the ONLY public holiday was celebrating the faith you weren't in...

What about SAINT Valentine's Day? Or SAINT Patrick's day?

Are those offensive, too?

Last time I checked neither of those are civic holidays that have government endorsed displays put up around town to celebrate them. At least, that doesn't happen where I live.

I hate the people who find something to complain about, about christmas, I mean hell, its not even really a religious holiday anymore its more of just a holiday. I don't -blam!- celebrate christmas because I believe in some god that someone else doesnt

  • 11.30.2012 12:32 AM PDT

I'm all for separation of church and state, but considering how Christmas trees really no longer have anything to do with the religious aspect of the holiday, I really can't see how someone can complain about them other than just for the sake of complaining. You don't see people -blam!-ing about Jack'O Lanterns, though that could be next.

A competitive players main goal is to win.
A casuals main goal is to have fun regardless of whether that results in a win or loss.
It has nothing to do with individual skill or knowledge, it has to do with the reason you play.

In today's day and age of butthurt, someone will complain. Doesn't offend me, however.

This.

  • 11.30.2012 12:40 AM PDT

Allons-y!

I honestly think Christmas should not be regarded as a religious holiday anymore, instead as just a customary festivity. Makes everyone more happy.
