"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
- Dr. Seuss

For this quadratic function:

y= 5x^2+10x+8, the axis of symmetry being -1, the function would come out to this:

y=5(-1)^2+10(-1)+8

According to PEMDAS, would the equation come out to be y=5-10+8, or y=25-10+8?

I'm confused on the parenthetical part, but does that only apply when there's something other than just one number inside a parenthesis?

I said y=5-10+8

The 5 is not squared.

That's what I was confused on.

Only because of Parenthesis Exponents of PEMDAS. Keeps making me think to multiply the number in front or behind the number/variable in the parenthesis regardless or not if it's squared.

what ever happened to Mister Math?

I'm pretty sure that answering this question is demeaning to just about anybody with any kind of knowledge of mathematics.

Just remember, a square only changes one number. Parenthesis might have 1 or more numbers in them, but since you solve them first typically, they are really one number. So the exponent only changes that one number.

I'm listeni- Oh wait I don't give a -blam!- what you have to say.

If you subtract the root quadratic first you're left with an unsolvable equation. Obviously this can't be the solution so multiply like terms with their common cubic factors then use FOIL to distribute the figures among the sub-fractions.

Finish by verifying with long division and squaring the quadratic with its former denominator.

You have the right idea, you just have to apply it. Since the exponent is being applied before you multiply, and the exponent is next to (-1), you only apply the exponent to -1. -1 squared is 1, which you then multiply by 5.
